Description
UNITEDI STATES PATENT OEEIeE.
O. L. LOOHMAN, OF CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORCELAIN-PRINTING FRAMES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,579, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O. L. LOOHMAN, of Oarlisle, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Improvement on a Porcelain-Printing Frame; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an inner view with the lid laid open. Fig. 2 is the reverse side, and Fig. 3 a vignettingboard, giving a sectional view.
I construct my apparatus in the usual form of an ordinary pressure printing-frame, with a rectangular frame, A A, to hold the negative, and a movable pressure board or lid, B, to press the object to receive the im pression down A to the negative by means of two or more springs, one of which is shown at f, Fig. 2; but for the purpose of printing' porcelain, opal, or glass pictures, which cannot be bent over like paper for examination during printing', I have devised the following improvements: The pressure board or lid B is hinged a short distance from the end, as shown at m m, Fig. l, and is kept steadily in its place with the screw D, which moves the block H against the lesser part of said board. By this arrangement a perfect contact can be made with any thickness of porcelain or negative and the lid fastened at any depth it may sink in to meet the negative. Said board or lid is furnished with two parallel sliding bars', G G, to which are fastened two sets ot' screws with their accompanying burrs. The screws move in the slots e e e c. For various sizes of negatives I provide the frame with movable holders F F, having different-sized openings.' The spring a keeps the negative in place. The screws D and E secure the negative-holder.
To my frame is adapted a vignetting-board, as shown with dotted lines b I) o o in Fig. 2 and a sectional view in Fig. 3. The projection S s on the inner side runs around a short distance from the opening a, to prevent the spread of light better than a mere opening would do. The vignetting-board is kept in place with the springs l d, Fig. 9.
I use my frame by removing entirely the lid B 5 place my negative in the holder F F in the opening at C, which is held fast with the spring a paste two narrow strips of adhesive paper or other suitable material along the back of the porcelain plate about to receive the picture; let the adhesive strips project a little from the plate on opposite sides; then secure the plate in the proper place on the lid B, with the parallel bars G G pressing on the projecting strips, and tightening with screws and burrs; put lid with porcelain plate down on the negative; press it down with springs ff and tighten the thumb-screw D, and the plate is ready for exposure, after adapting the vignetting-board on the reverse or negative side.
The inner edges of the bars G G may be mounted with gum or leather, or a set of double bars used, clasping leather or gum and forcing it up against the opposite edges of the porcelain plate, and so held 'in sitzt.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the slotted lid B with the movable bars G G, mounted with leather, gum, or other elastic cushion, to grasp the two opposite edges of the porcelain plate in the manner shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of frame B, negativeholder F F, spring a, and hinged lid B with its movable bars G G and springs f f, arranged, constructed, and operating` in the manner substantially as shown and described.
3. The movable bars G G, with their accompanying screws and bnrrs, moving in slots, as represented, or their equivalents.
4. A movable negative-holder, F F, with spring a and fastening-screw E.
O. L. LOOHMAN,
Titnesses J No. H. ELLIOTT, A. L. SPINs'rEE.
