Description

(No Model.)
G. EASTMAN. PHOTOGRAPHIG FILM HOLDER.
N0. 563,915. Patented July 14, 1896.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE EASTMAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
PHOTOGRAPHlC-FILM HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,915, dated July 1 1, 1896.
Application filed May S, 1896. Serial No. 590,741. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE EASTMAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic Plate and Film Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference letters marked thereon.
My present invention has for its object to provide a holder for sensitized photographic films, that shall be simple and cheap in construction and occupy but little space, so that a large number of them and their continued films may be conveniently carried by the user, said holders being also adapted for plates, if desired; and to'these ends it consists in the improved construction hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a film-holder constructed in accord-' ance with my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view with the parts separated; Fig. 3, a longitudinal sectional view of the holder; Fig. l, a cross-sectional view; Fig. 5, afront view with the slide withdrawn, showing the manner of removing a film.
Similar reference-letters in the several figures indicate similar parts.
My improved holder embodies, generally, an outside envelop or easing A, an interior envelop or case 0 for the film or plate, and a movable exposing-slide or covering-envelop B, each of said parts being composed, preferably,of a doubled piece of sheet material, preferably heavy Manila paper, although sheet metal could be employed if desired.
The blank for the outside casing A is shown in Fig. 2, consisting of a sheet of material bent or folded at a to form a back imperfo-- rate portion A, and the front portion A provided with the aperture A through which the plate or film is exposed. This outside casing A is provided with a slot a along the fold-line a for the passage of the exposingslide. For the purpose of giving depth to the holder, small strips a of cardboard or similar material are fastened to the back portion A by glue or otherwise, or these strips could be united in a single light open frame if desired, as will be understood. The movable slide or cover B is also composed of a single piece of sheet material, preferably paper, bent or folded at the middle, and of a width about the same as the slot at in the outer cover, while the inner ends of the two parts are extended, as at Z), so as to be wider than the length of the slot and to serve as stops to prevent the entire withdrawal of the slide B. The doubled end of the slide is provided with a loop 12 on its outer side to serve as a handle for manipulating it.
The inner film-containing envelop O, which if located inside the slide B, is also composed of a single doubled piece of sheet material, as paper, and is of a width greater than that of the slot 0!, to prevent its withdrawal through the slot, its rear flap or portion being imperforate, while the front portion is provided with the opening 0 for exposing the film, preferably slightly longer than the film D it is adapted to contain, and at the rear end tapering toward the center, as shown, to prevent the end of the slide catching upon it when moved in.
In assembling the parts of the holder, the easin g A, with the strips or frame a is opened, as in Fig. 2. The slide B is placed therein with its doubled edge projecting through the slot a. Then the inner envelop O is placed inside the slide B, and the outer front part A is folded over and secured at its edges, by glue or otherwise, to the strips or frame a", and, if desired, to the rear part A also, and then the edges of the parts A and A beyond the strips a may be trimmed off,if desired, and the holder is complete. As the films D, which this holder is adapted to contain, are slightly shorter than a part at least of the opening in the front of the interior envelop 0 they may be removed by using the finger or a pin to lift up the end,as shown in Fig. 5, and then slightly flexed laterally and drawn out through the front when the slide B is withdrawn for the purpose, and they may be inserted by a reverse movement, as will be understood. The tapering ofthe opening in the front portion of the envelop 0 serves the double purpose of permitting the removal or insertion of the film and also of preventing the edge of the slide 13 from catching upon it.
Holders thus constructed could of course be employed for plates and could be made of metal, but I prefer to make them of paper or Manila board and use them. in connection with small pieces of flexible film, and while i the drawings show the parts as comparatively thick, this is merely for the purpose of better illustration.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a film-holder, the combination with the outer envelop A having the open front and slot at one end, and the interior film-inclosing envelop C, also having the opening at the front, of the slide B composed of the single piece of material doubled over the envelop O and having its doubled edge projecting through the slot in the outer envelop A, the Whole arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. In a film-holder, the combination with the outer envelop A having the open front and the slot at one end, and the interior filminelosing envelop C also having the opening at the front, of the slide B, composed of the single piece of material doubled, with its doubled edge passing through the slot in the envelop A and having the projections formed on its ends serving as stops and preventing its complete withdrawal, substantially as described.
In a film-holder, the combination with the outer envelop composed of the single piece of material folded over upon itself having the open front, and the slot at the folded edge, of the inner envelop composed of the single piece of material folded over upon itself and having the open front, and the slide B consisting of a single piece of material extending over the inner envelop with its folded edge projecting through the slot in the outer envelop, substantially as described.
4. In a film-holder, the combination with the outer casing having the open front and the slot at one end, the inner Jilm-inclosing envelop C having the open front, and wider than the length of the slot in the envelop, and the slide 15 movable through the slot in the outer casing and extending on both sides of the envelop G, substantially as described.
