PRINTING-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 2, 1910.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Serial No. 590,304.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DULANEY IV. FAULK, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Coatesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PrintingFrames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in printing frames and more particularly to that class adapted to be used in printing photographs, post cards, etc., and my object is to provide a frame having an opening therein over which the plates or films to be printed are placed.
A further object is to provide yielding means for holding the plate or film in engagement with the frame.
A further object is to so construct the holding device as to form a guide for the sensitized card on which the imprint is to be made.
A further object is to provide means for moving the holding device out of engagement with the plate or film.
A further object is to provide a clamp for holding the sensitized paper onto the plate or film while being printed.
A further object is to provide yielding hinges for holding the clamp.
A further object is to provide a latch for holding the clamp in its closed position, and, a further object is to provide means for swinging the clamp to an open position when released from the latch.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the printing frame, showing the parts clamped in position for printing purposes. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the clamp in its elevated position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking at the opposite edge from that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. f is a sectional view as seen on line M, Fig. 1, and, Fig. 5 is a sectional View as seen on line 55, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the frame, which may be con structed in any preferred manner and 9. is a handle portion therefor, while 3 indicates an opening through the bodyof the frame over which the plate or film & rests during the printing operation.
The plate after being placed over the opening 3 is securely held in position by an L-shaped bar 5, which bar is held in engage ment with one edge and one end of the plate under pressure by means of bowed springs 6, one end of each of the springs being secured to the frame while the opposite ends thereof are attached to the bar. In order to elevate the bar out of engagement with the plate a shaft 7 is positioned parallel with and above the longitudinal portion of the bar engaging the edge of the plate and is mounted in suitable standards 8 extending upwardly from the frame. The pintles 9 of the shaft 7 are eccentrically arranged at the ends of the shaft 7 so that when the shaft is rotated it will. act as a cam and by extending collars 10 around the shaft and attaching the same by pivots parallel with the shaft 7, to cars 11 on the bar 5, said bar will be elevated when the shaft is rotated. To facilitate the rotation of the shaft 7 a milled knob or the like 12 is attached to one of the pintles and by grasping said knob the shaft can be easily rotated in either direction. After the plate has been placed in position over the opening and the bar 5 lowered into engagement therewith, the sensitized card can be quickly and accurately placed in position over the plate, as the inner edges of the bar will form a perfect guide for the card. After a film, has been placed in position over the opening 3 and the card is placed in position over the film a clamp 13 is lowered into position over the card, the engaging face of said clamp being preferably provided with felt 1a, or other cushioning material. One end of the clamp is secured to a block 15 at one end of the frame through the medium of hinges 16, said hinges being preferably composed of three leaves 17, 18 and 19, the leaf 17 being attached to the clamp and the leaf 19 to the outer side of the block, while the leaf 18 is hinged at its opposite edges to and between the other two leaves and extends over the upper face of the block. The object in constructing the hinges in this manner is to accommodate plates or films of varying thicknesses and when a plate, negative, or film of greater thickness is used, the three part hinge will permit the clamp to rise sufliciently to accommodate the plate and at the same time maintain a uniform pressure on the plate.
The section 18 of the hinge is normally held seated on the upper face of the block by extending a screw 20 through an opening in the section 18 and into the block 15, a tension spring 21 being introduced around the screw and between the head thereon and the upper face of the section 18 of the hinge. A suitable cushion may be inserted under the section 18 and this with the spring 21 will give a yielding pressure on the hinge to accommodate various thicknesses of plates or films as before stated. The three-part hinge permits the clamp to be kept in a horizontal position while being raised or lowered. The clamp 13 is held in its lowered position through the medium of a latch 22, which is pivotally mounted between ears on the frame 1, said latch being so situated tha' the inner end thereof will extend over and engage a tongue 2% carried by the clamp and the latch is held in engagement with the tongue by placing a spring 25 between the face of the frame 1 and the handle portion of the latch. In order to immediately swing the clamp upwardly and from over the card 26, a flat spring 2? is provided, one end of the spring being secured to the outer face of the block 15 while the opposite end thereof is intro duced below a clip 28 on the outer face of the clamp and it will be readily seen that when the clamp is thrown to its lowered position the elasticity of the spring will be exerted in such manner as to immediately elevate the clamp when the latch is released therefrom.
By this form of device it will be seen that the printing operation may be greatly facilitated, as the plates and cards can be quickly placed thereon or removed therefrom, and, it will likewise be seen that the device can be produced at a minimum expense and rendered extremely strong and durable.
What I claim is:
l. in aprinting device the combination with a frame having an opening therethrough, of an L-shaped bar adjacent said opening, means to hold said bar in engagement with the frame under pressure, collars pivoted to the bar, an eccentrically mounted shaft extending through said collars adapted to raise the bar when the shaft is rotated, a clamp hinged to said frame, means to hold said clamp in its lowered position under tension and a spring adapted to swing the clamp upwardly when the holding means is released.
2. A printing frame comprising a base having an exposing opening, a block transversely secured to the base in position parallel with and at a short distance from one end of said opening, a clamp of substantially the thickness of the block adapted to cover the opening, having one end adjacent to the inner side of said block, a three-part hinge having one leaf secured to the clamp, a second leaf connected to the first by a pintle lying over the space between the clamp and block said second leaf being adapted to lie upon the top of the block, and the third leaf oined to the second by a pintle at the outer edge of the block and secured to the outer side of the block, the second leaf having an opening through it, a screw extended through said opening into the block, and a spring coiled around the body of the screw between its head and the leaf.
3. A printing frame comprising a base having an exposing opening, rightangular shaped springs secured to one longitudinal side of the base extending upward and having their upper portions to substantial parallelism with the top of the base and slightly projecting over the exposing opening, an L shaped bar above the base having its longitudinal portion projecting over and parallel with one side of the opening and secured under and to the overhanging ends of the springs, bearings mounted on the base, a shaft above and parallel with the longitudinal portion of the L shaped bar and eccentrically ournaled in said bearings, collars around the shaft having downward extensions, and ears on the L shaped bar, and pintles parallel with the shaft pivotally connecting the extensions with the ears.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
