' UNITED STATESI PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. PARFITT, or TIGERTON, wscoNsIN.
. v PHOTOGRAPHIC-PRINTING- To all rwhom 'it may concern Be it known that I,""`JAMiis H. PAiiriTT, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Tigerto'n, in the county of Shawano and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Photographic-Printing Frame,
Iof which the following is a. specification.
.My invention relates to a printing device to be operated by manual labor, and its object is, to facilitate the labor to such an extentthat a single person can operate it .and print a larger number of pictures in a given time, than can be printed upon the frames in general use, and it consists of a base or back foundation board having an opening through it, through which.light ca n pass, and adapted to be secured to the side c asings of a window in a room, and to which the printing mechanism is secured, such mechanism consisting of a sliding shutter, normally closed over the light receiving opening in the back board, arranged to be opened by the downward pressure of the foot of the operator upon a treadle, a negative and card holding frame secured to the base 0r back piece between ther'shutter and printer, and a platen secured to a lever which is hinged to the upper edge of the printing frame to be operated by the printer as the cards to be printed are placed by said printer over the negative to be printed from, a slide being arranged for receiving the cards as they are released from pressure of the platen against the card, and a boi: into which the cards are directed by the. slide.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in whiclnl Figure 1 is a plan of the printing frame base or back board, with the printing frame removed. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the parts shown in Fig. V.1 below the line a, a, of said figure. Fig. 3 is a plan of the shutter showing its rear side. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of Figs. 1 and 2 midway their ends upon the line thereof, the light excludingshutter being omitted. Fig. 5 is a plan of the rear s ide of the negative holding and card receiving frame with its springs. Fig. 6 is a central horizontal section of Fig; 5 upon the line y, y, of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a vertical section upon the line b, Zi, of Fig. 11, of the negative and card holding and printing frame. Fig. 8 is a plan of a supplemental plate holder and card or film sup orter. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the printing frame secured in po- Speeieation of Letters Patent. p Patented June 23, 1914 animation mea June e, 1913. smal No. 772,169.
sition across a window, and showing its foot operating treadle Vand printed card chute -and receiving box. Fig. 10 is a plan of the inside frame member, shown in Fig. 5, showing its front face with a negative holder and card supporter, bolted in position thereon. Fig. 11 is a cross section of Fig. 'upon the line c, c, thereof.
Similar numerals and letters indicate like parts in the several views.
1, indicates a window side casing in a room; 2, the window sill; 3, the sash; f1, the glass, 5, is the base or back board of the printing frame, adapted to be secured in position across the -window with screws 6, through suitable holes therein, said piece 5, having an opening 7, for the passage of light from the window.
A printing frame holder is secured to the piece 5 with screws 8, consisting of a board 9, provided with an opening l0, and end and side pieces 11, which space the board 9 from the board 5, those at the side edges being rabbeted and forming grooves 12, within which a shutter 13, is fitted to slide for opening or closing the opening 10, the shutter being kept closed normally by means of coiled springs 14, which connect the shutter with the end pieces 11 by screws 1 4. The shutter is provided with a cord 15, which is secured to the shutter in a suitable manner,
as by the loop 16, the cord being carried over a pulley 17, which is mounted to revolve within a bracket 18, and extended K downward to near the floor where it is connected to a treadle 19, the treadle being hinged to a block 20, which is adapted to be screwed down upon the floor. The treadle being arranged in position under the window for its easy operation by the foot of the printer. a slight downward pressure thereon will act to open vthe shutter and it can be kept open loiigas said pressure is maintained. 4
A negative and ,'card holder frame is cured in position ver the shutter opening 10, and consists oiptwo distinct frame memw bers, 21 and 22, both being rectangular, the
outer frame member being provided around its inside with shoulder 23, upon lwhich the member 22 is supported, and being also provided with buttoiis or clips 24, and the frame member 2Q, isprovidedupon each end piece with a .leaf spring 25, pivotally and loosely mounted upon pins or screws 26, the ends of the springs being adapted in length to be swung under the projecting part of the buttons 24, and thereby detachably holding the two members together. The frame member 22, is rovided with an opening 27, the surrounding walls of which are beveled outwardly toward the light receivin openings 7 and 10. This inner framemem cr can'be quickly removed and another with a different sized opening 27, inserted, by swinging the ends of the leaf springs from under the. buttons first, and then returning them to that place after another frame member has been inserted. These two viframe members when assembled together, are secured to the board 9 by bolts 28, having each two nuts, 29 and 30, spaced apart, a socket 31,'being cut in the rear face of the member 21 for receiving the nut 29. Upon. the upper and outer edge ofthe member 2l, a cap piece 32 is secure extending forward from the outside face of-lilling pieces 32', at top and bottom of said member the major portion of an inch. Hinged to this cap piece by hinge 32h, a hand lever 33 is arranged, having secured thereto by means of acentrally arranged boltl 34, a platen 35, provided .with
dowels 36for holding the platen square with the lever, and that others with like positioned dowelsmay be substituted for this particular size. Y
To the front face of the member 22, a
- negative holder 37, is secured by bolts and thumb nuts 38, the negative 39, beingl clamped between the piece 37 and outside face of the member 22. The outside face of the member 22, being plain, the negative can be adjusted in a vertical or horizontal direction, so that the pict'ure to be printed will be transferred to the card to be printed in a position upon the cards that the taste of the printer requires. The cards to be printed, (indicated in dotted lines inside of the platen 37,) are placed one at a time with an end a ainst the shoulder 40, of the piece shoulder and between the 37 and t eir lower edge restin upon the upper edge of said piece at the Ieit of said laten and negative, when the printer, ta ing hold of the handle of the lever 33, presses the platen toward the negative, and at the same time presses downward with the foot upon vthe ltreadle which 'pulls'l the shutter open and admits the light to the negative for the i length of time required. As the cards are printed, theyrwill, uplon the loosenin l up of the platen, drop om the edge o the piece 37 tothe slide 42, and then vto the 0X 43. The frame 22 beingl held Within'.
the frame member 21, between the shoulder 23 and buttons 24, by' means :ofthe two springs 25, the pressure of the platen against the card, acts upon said s rings in such a manner that whatever the t ickness, (within reasonable limits), of the negativeI and wird to be printed, 4the platen will be pressed the member 22, and is casings t `e kni Ain-said back board; spac nboard- 'and' being "provided vrith.
evenly over its entire surface against the card.
In making kodak work and printing from films, a clear glass plate is used instead of a negative plate, and a. different holder is required from the piece 37. This is shown in Fig. 8, and consists of a piece 44, to be secured to the member 22, with the same bolts and thumb nuts 38, as 37 is, and which is for holding the clear glass plate against provided with an L shaped piece 45, which 1s connected thereto by spring 'clips 46, the piece 45 being adapted forholding a film between it and the glass plate. The clips are permanently secured to the piece 45 with screws or nails 47, and are loosely connected to the piece 44, with round or vother shaped thumb nuts 48, the spring of the clips ermitting the piece 45 to be sprung away rom the glass plate for the insertion of a film.
