To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE R. OLSON and DEMMIE HIATT, citizens of the United States, residing at Plattsmouth, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Printing -Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in photographic printing machines or apparatus of thatclass used for printing a number of photographs from the same negative with a uniform exposure.
The object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of machines of this character and thereby render them less expensive and more durable and eihcient.
Further objects of the invention are to provide improved means for holding and ad ustlng the negative with respect to the platen, improved means for supporting the sensitized element upon the platen, improved means for adjusting and operating the platen, an improved shutter and operating means therefor, improved means for controllingthe length of exposure, and im-' proved means for resetting the shutter mechanism. F

In the drawings 1 denotes a suitable support formed with an opening 2 through which either natural or artificial light is admitted to the negative N from which a plurality of photographic prints are to be made. While any suitable means may be provided for supporting and adjusting the negative at the opening 2, it is preferably carried by a holder 3 in the form of a slide having its strips 4 secured vertically upon the rear 7 face of the support 1 on opposite sides of the opening 2. The slide or holder 3 is adjusted by means of a lever 5 pivoted at one end, as at 6, to the support land having its intermediate portion connected by a resilient link or spring 7 to the slide. Said spring 7 has its lower end'pivoted to the lever and its upper end formed with an opening to receive a stud 8 arranged centrally upon the lower portion of the slide. The slots 39 are of such length that when the support 37 is moved forwardly on the'bottom of the plate 28 its front edge will project sufficiently inadvance of the front face of said plate to receive the bottom edge of same and when moved rearwardly said front edge of the su port E will move frombeneath the sensitized element s 0, that the latter will drop from the pressure back. Two leafsprings 31 are arranged in recesses 34 in the plate 28 and have their upper ends secured in said recesses and their lower or free ends bearing against the rear edgepf the support 37 so as to project the same forwardly to an operative position. Said support 37 is adapted to be automatically retracted as the platen swings away from the ne ative by means of a lever 40 arranged in a s ot inthe platen and pivoted intermediate its ends therein, as shown at 41. The forward end of the lever 40 is formed with a catch hook 42 provided with a beveled end and adapted to the support or plate 37. The rear end of the lever 40 is disposed above the link 23 and is 27 and-to permit t to be adjusted angu arly adapted to be actuated by the same when'the into openings in the plate 28, as shown more i clearly in Fig. 7. it is preferably retained in itsadjusted position by means of a spring pawl which en- 0 gages ratchet teeth or notches 48 formed on the shaft 46, as clearly shown in Fig. 9 of.
the drawings. The rock shaft 46 has at its ends reduced pivot studs or journals 49 mounted for rotation in hearing brackets 50 secured to the opposite ends of the plate 28 of the pressure back and said shaft is spring actuated in one direction by a spring 51.-
Said rock shaft is actuated in the opposite direction by. the movement of the platen 30 through the instrumentality of a cord or flexible element 52, one end of which is attached to the shaft 20 or any other stationary support and the other end of which is attached to and wound upon a drum 53 fixed to the rock shaft. The spring 51 actu ates the rock shaft to swing the stop arm 44 forwardly and downwardly against the pressure back when the platen moves away from the negative and when the platen moves forwardly toward the negative the unwindingof the cord 52 from the drum 53 causes the latter, and hence the rock shaft, to rotate against the tension of its spring to swing the stop arm 44 upwardly and rearwardly to a retracted position. The shaft 20 for the operating lever or bell crank 21 is preferably removably mounted by engaging one of its ends with a flanged cup-shaped bushin 54 arranged in a bearing in one of the bradlkets 10, as shown in Fig. 6, and engaging its other end with a flanged sleeve-like bushing 55 arranged in abearing in the other bracket 10. The bushing 54 prevents endwise movement of the shaft 20 in one direction and to prevent such movement in the other direction a stop collar 56 is arranged on the shaft and held against the flange of the bushing 55 by a set screw 57, as more clearly shown in said Fig. 6; By mounting the shaft 20 in this manner, it will be seen that it may be removed without the necessity of unscrewing the brackets 10 from the supportl.
For the purpose of admitting light through the opening 2 and to the negative by gravity and they are held elevated and successively released by means of a supporting and controlling lever 62 which is pivoted intermediate its ends at 63 in a supporting bracket 64. The lower end of the lever 62 has two supporting shoulders in the form of hooks 65, 66, the latter of which is arranged above the former and made of reater length, for a purpose presently exp ained. Said hooks 65, 66 are so arranged that they will engage pins 67, 68 provided, respectively, on the shutters 58, 59, the in 67 being arranged adjacent to the top or the shutter 58 while the pin 68 is arranged adjacent to the bottom of the shutter 59. The hooks engage said pins when the shutters are elevated, as shown in Fig. 2, upon reference to which it will be seen that the lower shutter 58 closes the opening 2 in the support 1. When the lever 62 is shifted to cause the hook 65 to disengage the pin 67 the lower shutter 58 will drop, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to expose the opening 2 and thereby expose the negative to the light, but the hook 66, being longer than the hook 65, will still. support the pin 68, as shown in said Fig. 3, until the lever 62 is shifted from its full line position in said figure to its dotted line position, whereupon the hook 66 disen 'ages t-he'pin 68 and the upper'shutter 59 drops down upon the lower shutter and closes the opening 2, thereby terminating the exposure. The lower shutter 58 when it drops rests upon a stop pin 69 arranged at asuitable point upon the support.
The lever 62 is adapted to be actuated to its two positions to drop the lower and upper shutters successively by means of a controlling member 70 in the form of a bar arranged for vertical sliding movement and carrying two pins 71, 72 adapted to successively engage the cam-shaped end73 of a trip lever 74 pivoted intermediate its ends at 75 on the bracket 64 and having its other end connected by a link 76 to the upper end of the shutter supporting and controlling lever 62. For the purpose of regulating the downward movement of the controlling member or' bar 70 a retarding or cushioning device is provided, the same preferably consisting of a rotary fan 80 arranged on a shaft jourthe support 1 and having fixed upon one of I upon it and confined between a shoulder or head 94 and an angle bracket 95 which its ends a pinion 82 which meshes with a gear 83. The latter is loose upon a shaft 84 journaled in a bearing 85 and it carries a spring pressed pivoted'pawl 86 which engages a ratchet wheel 87 fixed to the shaft 84. Fixed to'the latter is also a pinion 88 which meshes with rackteeth 89 formed in one of the edges of the upper portion of the controlling member or bar 70. 'It will be seen that as the member or bar moves downwardly its rack89 will rotate the shaft 84 and the pawl and ratchet connection 86, 87 will thereby lock the gear 83 to the shaft 84 and the fan will be rotated to retard or cushion the downward movement of said controlling member. The pawl and ratchet connection 86, 87 permits the controlling member or bar 70 to be raised or reset, as presently explained, without rotating the The movement of the controllingv member or bar 70 is controlled by the movement of the platen 16, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 8 of the drawings. This control is effected by means of a dog 90 in the form of a bell crank pivoted at its angle,'as at 91,

form of an angle plate securedto the front when. the latter is released it may move its pivoted end. Pivoted to the rear face of the slide 100 is a link 106 which connects it to the intermediate portion of a lever' 107 fulcrumed at one end, as shown at 108.
- The other end of said lever 107 is connected by a link 109 to a slide 110 arranged in the undercut guides 61, 77 and adapted to engage the ldwer end of the controlling member or bar 70 and .to move the latter upwardly to its reset position. The slide 110 carries a lifting arm 111 arranged in the path of a pin 112 secured to the lower portion of the lower shutter 58. Owing to these link and lever connections, it will be seen that when the platen 17 is swung rearwardly away from the negative the arm 105 will cause the link 104 to elevate the slide and the latter will cause the link 106 to' lift the lever 107 which inturn will elevate the slidellOL Said slide 110 will lift the controllingmember or bar 70 to its elevateding arm 114 in the lever 62, thereby swinging said lever .to cause its hooks 65, 66 to swing underthe pins 67, 68.

The handle end of the lever 21 is then swung downwardly so that the link 23 swings the platen forwardly and causes the pressure back to press the sensitized element against the negative. When the-platen moves forwardly the stop arm 54 is retracted, as above explained, and the hook 42 of, the catch lever 40 slips under and engages the projection 43 on the retractable support 37. The'forward movement of the platen causes the trip 99 to operate the rod 92 and retract the dog 90, thereby releasing the controlling member or bar 70 which-begins to descend under the control of the rotary fan 80. Shortly after the controlling member or bar 80 begins to descend its pin 71 actuates the trip lever 74 and the latter through the link 76 shifts the lever 62 to cause its hook 65 to release the pin 67 of the shutter 58, which latter then drops to expose the negative to the light and begin the exposure. When the pin 72 reaches the lever 74the latter is again actuated and shifts the lever. 62 to a greater extent so as toretract its hook 66 from engagement with the pin 68, whereupon the upper shutter 59 will drop to close the opening 2 and terminate the exposure. The lever 21 is then swung upwardly to retract the platen. As the latter is swung rearwardly or away from the negative the hook 42 of the catch lever 40 locks the support 37 to the rear plate 27 of the pressure back while the springs 82 project the front plate 28 of said pressure back, thereby causing the support 77 to assume its retracted position and allowing the sensitized element E to drop from the pressure back. The con tinued rearward movement of the platen causes the link 23 to engage the rear end of the catch lever 40 and actuate it upwardly to swing its hook 42 downwardly and out of engagement with the projection 43 on the support 37, whereupon the springs 31 will pro ect said support to a position ready -to receive the next sensitized element. As the platen swings rearwardly the side stop arm 44 swings forwardly and downwardly to an operative position. Said movementof the platen also causes the arm 105 which it carries to actuate the slides 100, 110 throu h the link and lever connections above descri ed so that the upward movement of the slide 110 will move the controlling member or bar to its elevated or reset position and the arm 111 of said slide will lift the to theirelevated or reset posithe machine above described the shading mechanism shown in Figs. 18 to 21 inclusive of the drawings, in which 1 denotes the negative at sa-i through which light is admitted to the negative. This attachment comprises a suitable casing 11 arranged over the front of the support 1 and having an opening I) of substantially the same size and shape as the opening 2 opposite whichit is disposed.

While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail it will be understood that various changes in the form proportion, arrangement and details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 1

In a photographic printing machine, the combination of; a support having an opening, means for supporting a negative at said opening, a platen movable toward and from the negative, a pair of superposed shutters slidably mounted for movement over said opening in the support and adapted to drop by gravity, a supporting means for the shutters adapted to successively release them, a slidable controlling member for operating said shutter supporting and releasing means, a resetting slide to engage and actuate said member and carrying means for engaging and actuating the lowermost shutter, a lever for actuating said slide and means actuated by the platen for operating said lever.
