UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPI-I M. SMITZ, OF DEPERE, .VISCONSIN.
CHAIR.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 697,372, dated April. 8, 1902.
Application filed May 6, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, ADOLPH M. SMITZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Depere, in the county of Brown and State of WVisconsimhave invented a new and Improved Chair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in chairs; and the object is to provide a chair with a convenient adjustable and detachable device for supporting a book or the like in front of a person sitting in the chair, and,
further, to provide a cover for a receptacle on the chair that may be used as a writingdesk, thus making the chair very useful for students or invalids.
I will describe a chair embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the chair, and Fig. 3 is a front View, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a chair-seat frame supported on the legs 2, and 3 represents the side bars of the back-frame. The arms 4 are provided with longitudinal channels 5,which open outward at the rear end of the arms, and movable in these channels are blocks 6, from which posts extend upward through outwardly-opening slots 7. The posts are made in two sections 8 and 9, the sections 9 being made to telescope into the sections 8, so that the height of the posts may be adjusted. As a means for clamping the sections 9 as adjusted relatively to the sections 8 the said sections 8 are slitted at their rear ends and are exteriorly screw-threaded to be engaged by interiorly-threaded sleeves 10. By screwing these sleeves downward the upper portions of the sections 8 will be pressed inward againstthe sections 9.
Adapted to be supported by'the posts is a rest 11 for a book, manuscript, or the like. This rest has attached to it a rod 12, designed to pass into eyes 13 at the upper ends of the sections 9 of the posts. As the rod may turn Serial No. 58,941. (No model.)
in these eyes, the angle of the'rest may be adjusted as desired and held as adjusted by set-bolts 14. When the book-rest is not desired or not in use, I design it to be supported within the back-frame of the chair. Therefore a section 15 ofthe back is made to swing relatively to the other parts of the back. As here shown, this section 15 is mounted in a frame the upper portion of which is hinged to a cross-bar 16. By swinging the portion 15 upward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the book-rest may be placed within the recess in the back, with the projected ends of the rod 12 seated in notches 17, formed in the side bars of the back. The arms 4 being extended rearward of the chair-back and the rear ends of the channels 5 being open,
as before stated, the posts maybe moved outward therefrom, as it will be seen that the arms are arranged at the outer sides of the parts 3 of the back, or the posts may be moved to and held in the rearward extensions of the arms and the book-rest hinged there on, so as to be out of the way when not in use, but in easy reach when desired for use.
Arranged between one of the arms and the seat-frame is a receptacle 18 for books, papers, documents, or the like. This receptacle is provided with a cover 19, which is hinged to the arm and may be moved upward, as in* dicated' in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to serve as a writing-desk. Mounted to swing on the opposite arm and underneath the sameis a tray 20 for containing matches or the like, and also mounted to swing on the under side of the arm is a tray 21 for ashes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A chair having arms with portions ex tended rearward of the chair-back, the said arms being provided with longitudinal chan nels opening outward at the rear end of the arms and closed at the front end, and slots opening outward from the channels, blocks movable in said channels, posts extended from the blocks through the slots, and a bookrest adapted to be supported by the posts, substantially as specified.
2. A chair having arms and a back, the side bars of said back being provided with notches,
a recess or opening in the back, a swinging In testimony whereof I have signed my section for closing said recess 01' opening, a name to this specification in the presence of book-rest adapted to be placed in said recess two subscribing Witnesses.
or opening, a rod on the book-rest for passing ADOLPH M. SMITZ. 5 into said notches, and means for supporting \Vitnesses:
the book-rest on the arms of the chair, sub- JNO. ELSEN,
stantially as specified. JEROME J. GLOUDEMANS.
