SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,090, dated April 8, 1902.

To (oZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDSON ORVILLE KEEF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Threshold-Gage, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to threshold-gages.
The object of the invention is to present a convenient, serviceable, simply-constructed, and readily-operable gage for use in fitting the thresholds of doors, in the use of which the severalnecessary measurements and lines can be taken from the doorway and then be conveniently and accurately transferred to the board from which the threshold is to be constructed, thereby avoidingloss of time and labor consumed by taking and transferring separately the series of measurements and obviating the liability of making errors in the presentation of non-fitting joints.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a threshold-gage, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention, and in these drawings- Figure 1 is a View in plan of the gage. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the gagebody, consisting of two stripsof metal 2 and 3, the inner end of each of which is provided with two oppositely-alined inturned lugs 4c, disposed in opposite directions, the lugs of the member 2 being designed to engage with the under side of the membgr 3 and the lugs of the member 3 with the upper side of the member 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, by which arrangement the said members may be extended laterally and still be held in positive engagement with each other. The memher 2 carries near its inner end a jam-screw 5, which by being turned down against the member 3 will serve to hold the parts at the desired lateral adjustment.
Connected with the outer end of each of the members 2 and 3 is a jamb-face gage 6, these being held assembled with the said members by means of thumb-screws 7, the lower ends of which have threaded engagement with openings in gages 6.. (Not shown.) By thus having the jamb-face gages pivotally associated with the gage-body the device may be adjusted to door-jambs the faces of which are slanting or disposed other than at right angles to the threshold.
As door-jambs are ordinarily constructed there is a door-rabbet provided in the jamb at each edge thereof, and in order to permit accurate measurement of these rabbets there is connected with the terminals of each of the jamb-face gages a square constituting a rabbet-gage 9 and 8, respectively, the gages 8 being designed to engage with the door-rabbets proper, while the gages 9 engage with the supplemental door-rabbets, or vice versa, as may be preferred. Both the gages 8 and 9 are provided with a slot 10, through which pass the threaded lower ends of two thumb-screws 11 and 12, the said ends of the screws also extending through slots 13 and 14 in the jambface gage and into engagement with a binding-nut, (not shown,) whereby the said rabbet-gages may be held at the desired adj ustment. One side and edge of the gages at the angles thereof is graduated, as at 15, whereby to determine the depth of the rabbet and also its length. Each of the gages 9 has associated with it a jamb-side gage 16, the same being associated with the gages 9 by a thumbscrew 17, which passes through a slot 18 in the jamb'side gage and a slot 19 in the jambtance above the floor or sill when the measurements are being taken.
In using the implement in laying out a threshold-board it is-first placed between the jambs, and the gage-bodyis extended to bring the jamb-face gages against the door-jamb, after which the jamb-screw 5 is tightened. The rabbet-gages 8 and 9 are then adjusted with relation to the door-rabbets, and the gages 16 are also adjusted, after which all of the parts are rigidly set by means of the jamb or thumb screws, and the implement is then placed upon the board that is to form the threshold, with the legs 20 hearing against the edge thereof and the outline of the threshold-board accurately transferred therefrom.
While the implement is herein described as to be used for the purpose of laying out thresholds, it is to be understood that it may be employed in other positions Where its'use will be found advantageous, so that by defining the implement as a threshold-gage but .one use to which it may be put is given.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A threshold-gage comprising an adjustable gage-body, jamb-face gages having pivotal con nection therewith rabbet-gages adapted for lateral and longitudinal adjustment with relation to the jamb-faoe gages,and jambside gages connected for lateral and longitudinal adjustment with two of the rabbetgages. v
2. A thresl'lold-gage comprising a two-membered gage-body, each member being provided with a pair of lugs to interlock with the other member, and with a jamb-screw for holding the members at the desired adjustment, jambface gages pivotally connected with the gagebody, graduated rabbet-gages connected with the terminals of the jambface gages, and adapted for longitudinal and transverse adjustment with relation thereto, laterally and longitudinally adjustable jamb -side gages carried by two of the rabbet-gages, and legs or stops carried by the terminals of the jam bface gages.
