WINDOW OPENING GAUGE Filed Jan. 8, 1947 Zwu 4, 21M INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 11, 1951 "UNITED v V Qasszm v WIND'GW OPENING' GnUGn Eraser- A; time, Li-verpo'o1-,;N .-l f implicationilanuaryS, 194?; serial No; ranges" This invention has to do with-a 'd'evice for gauging the contour 'df a' window ordoor-ope'nlug, whereby a storm sash, screen, or door, may be 'cut to the proper dimensionand contourfor the opening.
Thefinvention hasas anobiect a-wi-ndowppening gauge embodying-a structure which isparticularly simple and' 'economical *to manuf'a'cture andwl'r'ich'can be conveniently "manipulated by ajworkmanworking on'a ladder. 1
The invention has *asa -'further obj eot a device of-"the typereferred to comprising 'a plate, o'r
member, having -apluralityof-arms e'xtend-mg outwardly, and wh-ich are moved into engagement with the fodrcorne'rs of the repening, and auxiliary arms for engaging intermediate portions-ofthe-opening, all whereby the dimensions and exact contour of the opening are quickly and accurately reproduced on the sash, or screen, to be fitted therein.
The invention consists in :thetnovel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth andcla'imed.
In describing this invention, reference is-had in ,the accompanying -drawings which like "characters "designate corresponding parts all thev'ie .7
Figure '1 is a irontelevationail view of a' deviee embodying my invention, with the opening shown in dotted outline.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33, Figure 1.
The device comprises a body or rectangular plate Ill. This plate may be formed of light material, such as laminated plywood, and is provided with a plurality of arms H extending outwardly from the plate. The arms I I are formed with rounded ends l2 or, if desired, the extending ends may be provided with rollers [3. The arms II are adjustable lengthwise and transversely of the plate In and accordingly of the window or door opening, illustrated in dotted outline at [5 in Figure 1, to move the ends of the arms into engagement with the corners of the opening. This adjustment is brought about in the structure disclosed by elongated slots I6 formed intermediate the ends of the arms ll. Clamping screws I! extend through the slots l6 and also through slots I8 formed in the plate In and extending in angular relation to the sides and ends thereof.

To accomplish this movement, the arms 28 are provided with slots 29, and the plate In is formed with slots 30. These slots accommodate a clamping bolt 3|, and this arrangement permits the arms to be swung outwardly into engagement with the sides of the opening and to be moved lengthwise thereof, as illustrated in Figure 1.
In use, the arms II are moved to retracted position, the device placed in the opening restin upon the arm 22 which may be previously adjusted to position the plate approximately in the center of the opening. Thereafter, the arms H are released and moved outwardly into engagement with each corner of the window opening. In order to facilitate this movement, especially when the worker is positioned upon a ladder, the inner ends of the arms H are connected to tension springs 32. The'ends of the springs 32 are connected to pulleys 33. A flexible strand 34 is trained over the pulleys 33 and stationary pulleys 35 mounted upon the plate adjacent the ends thereof, whereby the springs 32 yieldingly urge all of the arms ll outwardly. Accordingly, it is only necessary to loosen the clamping bolts l1, l9, and the arms move outwardly moving the ends of the arms into engagement with the corners of the opening, whereupon the arms may be securely clamped to the plate by the clamping screws. The auxiliary arms 28 are then moved outwardly into engagement with the sides of the opening and clamped by the screws 3|. The device is then laid upon the sash, or door, and a straight edge is used to scribe the outline of the opening. When the sash, or door, is cut to this outline, it is a'perfect: fit for the opening. The plate may be provided with one or more handles 35 for convenient manipulation of the device.
I am not unmindful of the fact that many templets and gauging devices of the general type have been previously used. However, they have not been satisfactory due to their complicated structure and the fact that they do not gauge the the corners of the opening. It will be apparent that my device is most convenient to manipulate and that it gives an accurate gauging of the contour of the opening. The device is simple to operate and, by its structure, will gaugev all window openings due to the relatively extensive adjustment of thearms I I. By substituting longer arms, the same device is employed for gaugin door openings.
vWhat I claim is: 7
H1. A window opening gauge comprising a rectangular plate, an arm extending substantially diagonally outwardly from each corner portion of the plate, the central portion of said plate being formed with a plurality of slots extending lengthwise of the plate and each corner portion of said plate being formed with a slot extending transversely across the corner portion of the plate and in angular relation to said first mentioned slots, each of said arms being formed with a slot arranged intermediate its ends and extending lengthwise thereof, a clamping member extending through the slot in each ofsaid arms and through the complemental corner slot in said plate, a clamping member carried by the inner end of each of said arms and being slidably arranged in one of said lengthwise extending slots, spring means, flexible connections between said spring means and the inner ends of said arms. said spring means and connections being operable to yielding urge said arms collectively outwardly into engagement with the corners of the window opening, and said clamp members being operable to fixedly clamp the arms to the plate.
2. A window opening gauge comprising a rectangular plate, the central portion of said plate being formed with a plurality of slots extending substantially lengthwise of the plate, each corner portion of said plate being formed with a slot extending transversely across the corner portion of the plate andin angular relation .to said first mentioned slots, an arm positioned to extend substantially diagonally outwardly from each corner portion of the plate, each of said arms bein formed with a slot arranged intermediate its ends and extending lengthwise thereof, a clamping member extending through the slot in each of said arms and through the complemental corner slot in said plate, and a clamping member carried by the inner end of each of said arms and being slidably arranged in one of said lengthwise extending slots.
3. A window opening gauge comprising a rectangular plate, a guide member mounted on each corner portion of the plate and being movable transversely thereof, an arm extending from the central portion of the plate outwardly in a diagonal direction from each corner portion of the plate, the inner end of each of said arms be ing pivotally connected to a guide means movable substantially lengthwise of said plate, the intermediate portion of each arm being slid-ably connected to one of said first mentioned corner guide members, and each of said corner guide members having a clamping means cooperable t0 fixedly clamp the guide member and the associated arm to said plate.
