Patented Aug. 26, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SASH LOOK Joseph Lipani, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor of onehalf to Vincent Casella, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application April 30, 1945, Serial No. 590,990
6 Claims. 7 1
My invention relates to improvements in means for securing window sashes or analogous movable structural parts in either open or closed positions, or in any intermediate position.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the locking means is, in part, carried by one sash or movable member, and, in part, by another sash or by a portion of the window casing in which the sash works.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which one member or part is mounted upon a movable window sash, and is adapted to engage with a cooperating member fixed upon th'e other sash or upon a portion of the window casing in which the sash works.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the member of the locking device carried by the movable sash frame is movably mounted to permit of its ready adjustment to operative or inoperative position.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a locking device in which the engaging member or part carried by the movable sash frame may be positively secured to a, position in or out of engagement with the member fixed upon the other sash or part.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a locking device of the character specified in which a longitudinal member is fixedly secured to one sash or window part, and a cooperating member comprising a pair of pivoted jaws mounted upon a movable sash adapted to engage said fixedly secured member at any point throughout its length to secure one or both sashes in open, closed or intermediate positions.
Other objects will, in part, be obvious, and, in part, be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section on the line l-l' of Fig. 2, showing one form of locking mechanism constructed according to, and embodying my said invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the clamping means in retracted position;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the clamping means in projected position and engaging the cooperating channel member;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view partly in section showing portion of a window casing and sash and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the clamping jaws and support.
In said drawings I0 designates a window casing of well-known form provided with upper and lower sash frames ll, [2, respectively, which Work between guide strips l3, l3 and the intermediate parting strip l4.
Upon the inner side of the vertical member l5 of the upper sash frame I I is provided a channel member l6 which is secured in fixed position thereon by screws IT. The forwardly-extending side members of said channel member 'are each provided with a series of spaced circular apertures [8. In order to insure the proper operation of the sash frames, the lower sash frame I2 is provided in its upper transverse member with a vertical recess l2 to accommodate the channel member I6.
Upon the upper side of the upper. transverse frame member [9 of the lower sash frame [2 is mounted a locking device comprising a base plate 20 having a raised central longitudinal portion 2| forming a recess 22 in the underside thereof. The raised central portion 2| is provided with a longitudinal slot 23 through which extends the stem of a bolt 24 having a square head 24 which is slidable within the recess 22 of the base plate 20.
'25 denotes a pair of spring-pressed jaws which are provided intermediate their ends with inwardly-extending overlapping ears 26 through which extends the bolt 24 serving to hold said jaws pivotally connected. The rear ends of said laws 25 are maintained normally separated by a spring 2! disposed between said rear ends and held in place by stops 28 projecting from the inner sides of said rear ends.
The clamping jaws 25 are secured by a circular knurled head 29 Working upon the upper end of the bolt 24. The head 29 is provided on its underside with a circular series of apertures 30 to be engaged by a stud 3| at the free end of a fiat spring 32 keyed to the stem of the bolt 24; to lock the head 29 to its adjusted position upon the bolt 24'.
The forward ends of said clamping jaws 25 are provided with short, inwardly-extending studs 33 adapted to engage with the apertures I8 in the channel member I6. The forward ends of said clamping jaws 25 are preferably slightly oiTset in order that the sides thereof may fully engage with the outer sides of the channel member I6 when the studs 33 are in due engagement with the apertures Hi to hold the sashes firmly and positively locked to adjusted positions.
The operation of the locking device will be largely obvious from the foregoing description. It should be noted, however, that the clamping jaws 25 bein movably or slidably mounted the same may be moved bodily into and out of position to engage with the channel member IE, and thus permit of the usual or normal raising and lowering of either sash, and that only when the sashes are to be locked in position does it become necessary to shift the clamping jaw 25 forwardly beyond the edge of the transverse frame member of the lower sash to render said clamping jaws 25 engageable with the channel member l6.
Further, it is to be noted that when the clamping jaws are adjusted to operative position and engaging the channel member iii, the same are automatically locked in position by the looking spring 32 and stud 3lthereon engaging the recesses as in the knurled head 29 of the bolt 24.
To release the clamping jaws 25, it becomes necessary to first depress the free end of the spring 32 to release the stud 3| thereon of its engagement with the head 29, and hold the same depressed until the head 29 has been unscrewed sufficiently to release the pressure on the jaws 25 whereupon the outer ends thereof may be compressed and the jaws moved bodily to inoperative position.
It will be obvious, that the channel member may be secured to the window casing above the lower sash and between the guide strip l3 and parting strip M, in which event the sash cord or chain would be disposed within the channel member l6, and the clamping jaws disposed longitudinally upon the transverse member of the lower sash frame l2.
From the above, it is apparent that the channel member 16 serves as an elongated member which is rigidly fixed on one of a plurality of relatively movable structural parts, and cooperating therewith is a member mounted on the other of such parts, such cooperating member including a base which is provided with suitable means slidably mounted on such base and when arranged in projected position to embrace such elongated member, and such base further provided with suitable means for securing the slidable means in its respective operative, i. e., locking position, and non-operative, i. e., non-locking, position, combined with suitable means for looking such securing means to desired adjusted position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
