SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,715, dated May 7,1 895. Application tiled February 15, 1895. l Serial No. 538,488. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE S. TOZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spragues Mill, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in MarkingDevices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification My invention relates to improvements in i5 marking devices, specially adapted for marking or indicating the proper dimensions of thresholds, although it may be used for measuring shelving, for fitting stairs or in fact for any purpose where the device could be efzo fectively employed.
The object of my invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive marking device which will practically indicate the proper dimensions of thresholds, shelves, stairs or lthe like and which will save a great amount of time and labor.
The invention with these objects in view consists of a measuring or marking device embodying novel features of construction and 3o combination of parts whereby a useful and necessary article is provided as will appear from the following disclosure.
In order that the details of construction of my markingor measuring device may be read- 3-5 ily understood and its advantages be fully appreciated I have shown in the accompanying drawings a deviceconstructed according to my invention.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device applied for marking or measuring the dimensions ol a threshold, the purpose being to show the application of my device for this purpose, although it may be used in any other situation where it would operate. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of my device in closed position. Fig. 3 represents a detail sectional view.
A designates one section of my marker and A designates the other section thereof, the
5o section A having a slot or channel B, and having the reduced shank C, also provided with a slot or channel D, and the section A', 'is provided with a slot or channel D, and also with a slot or channel E. In the slots D and D is placed the thumb or adjusting screw F, by means of which the two sections A and A', are slidingly and adjustably connected. In the slots B and E of the two adjustable sections are adjustably connected by adjusting screws G, the series of adjusting arms H, J, K, which are formed with slots H', J', K', and these arms are arranged square Awith the main sections or at a right angle thereto and can be easily and quickly adjusted with reference to the main sections to suit a threshold or shelf or stair step of any width. These arms are of different lengths the inner sections or arms H being longer than the others and to the longer sections are secured adjustably by means of screws L, the arms M, having a slot N, and the purpose of these arms is to get the proper width and square with reference to the main sections and the side arms. The short arms M are adapted to be adjusted at a right angle to the other arms for the purpose of obtaining the width measurement of a threshold strip, a shelf or a step. One of the arms may be adjusted at an angle if desired to give angular cornice measurement.
In using mydevice for marking or measuring thresholds the main sections are adjusted laterally to the proper Width, the series of side sections are adjusted to the proper dimensions for the casing, and the short arms onthe longest of the arms are adjusted to the proper breadth of the threshold, as clearly indicated in Fig. l, and after one has been measured the proper dimensions for every threshold in the building or structure can be marked without changing the device and thus a vast amount of time and labor, and consequently money are saved as well as insuring a most perfect measurement.
The device is entirely efficient for measuring shelving or steps and where a great amount of work is to be accomplished the device is invaluable.
I claim- A marking or measuring device, consisting of the main sections fitting one upon the other and laterally adjustable, set screws engaging IOO both sections to hold them at the proper adjustment, a series of sections of Varying lengths connected to the outer ends of the main sections and adjustable on said main section, and short sections connected to one of the series of sections and adjustable with reference thereto.
