EXTENSIBLE DOOR OPENING AYND JAMB GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratentedauiy 25., 191e.
Application led August 11., 1915. Serial No. 44,977.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known `that I, CARL J. HALLBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Tool to be Known as an Extensible Door Opening and J amb Gage, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools for squaring, gaging, paralleling, and holding in set position door-jambs while the door-casing is being constructed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, extensible, practical tool by means of ywhich said operations may be expeditiously and eficiently accomplished.
The invention consists, substantially, in
tlie improvements hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention: Figure l is a plan view of one of the duplicate members of the device; Fig. 2, an inverted plan thereof, turned end-for-end; Fig. 3, a plan view of the device in assembled and closed position; Fig. 4, a similar view, the device partly eX- tended; Fig. 5 an edge view; Fig. 6, an assembly view, showing details; Fig. 7, a faceview of a door-frame with my improvements in operative position between the jambs; and Fig. 8, a transverse section illustrating the construction of a door frame and par-` tition, my improvements being shown as applied.
Coming now to a detailed description of j ment by a distinguishing reference characgage-sections eachv of which com` hole 4. qf one of the blades 2 and its arminal projects through the slot 3 of the other blade, while the shank ofthe other bolt rests in said slot and projects through the hole 4 of the other blade, and each is engaged by a wing-nut l2. This arrangement 1s such that the blades are maintained constantly,v in parallelism, and inasmuch as the,
heads g are fixed at right angles to the rblades theyalso will be held in parallelism.
Referring particularly to Fig. l, b, b indicate flooring-boards; c, c, door-jambs standing thereon; d, d, sections of the sub-floor;
e, e, plaster; 7', f, the door-casing head; k,- I.,
vertically arranged pieces of scantling; Z, Z, the lath; and J, J, wedgejshingles used in plumbing and truing up the jambs e. These are shown merely to illustrate a door frame and partition construction. After the jambs c are positioned on the floor-boards b the head f, which of course has been eut to proper length, is secured in place. The gage is then placed on the boards ZJ between said jambs, it having been adjusted to the same,
length as the head f, which length will be 'indicated by the inner end of one of the blades 2 on the companion blade, as shown best at a, Fig. 8. The wedge-shingles J, J', are then employed to move the jambs to the desired positions, this being determined by plumbing them. lt will be'evident that not only will the lower ends of the jambs be spaced the same distance from each other as are their upper ends but also that their faces are maintained parallel if brought snugly against the outer faces yof the heads 6. The lips i and the bodies of the heads g form a square or rectangle and together fit y closely over the exposed face and one edge of the j amb, whereby to prevent the latter from turning. The lip further acts as a stop in positioning the device between the jambsand thereby determines its position.
As has earlier herein been stated, each blade and each head is provided with a graduated scale. These are arranged on the opposed faces of the elements when assembled, whereby the tool is reversible and a cdimension reading may be had from either s1 e.
Having thus described my invention, I said bolts, and a cross-head fixed to .each claim as new and desire to secure by Letblade and having an outwardly turned pro- 10 ters Patent the following, namely zjecnion.
In a tool, e pair of blades each of which CARL J HALLBERG 5 is provided with :L longitudinally arranged slot, bolts seated each in the body of one of Witnesses: saidblades and adapted to move in the slot C. A. JOHNSON, of the other, nuts, each engaglng one of CARLCARLSON.
