TH RESHOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,465, dated April 3, 1900.
llpplication led April 17, 1899. Serial No. 713,331. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known thatl, GEORGE A. SEELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emmetsburg, in the county of Palo Alto and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thresholds 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to devise a threshold of the adjustable type which will maintain a tight joint between the meeting or opposing longitudinal edges of a movable bar and guide-strips at all times and under all conditions, thereby eXcludin g wind, wet, and dust, and which Will be of simple construction, capable of being readily applied to any sill, and not liable to derangement.
The threshold will be described at length hereinafter and is illustrated in detail in the drawings hereto attached, inv which corresponding and like parts are designated by like reference characters in all the views.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a top plan View of the threshold. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base, the adjustable bar being omitted. Fig. 3 is a transverse section o'n the line X X of Fig. l.
The base l of the threshold is a plate of wood. Longitudinal strips 2, spaced apart, are secured to the base in parallel relation and are likewise of Wood. The space 3, formed between the guidenstrips 2 and the base l, receives the movable section 4, which is adjustable vertically to make a close contact with the lower edge of the door. The part 4 is a bar of wood and is provided at its longitudinal edges with pendent wings or iianges 5, which touch the inner faces of the strips 2. Openings 6 are formed at intervals in the length of the bar 4 to receive the securing and adjusting screws 7, the heads of the said screws being countersunk in the bar 4 to come Hush therewith.
The bar 4 is heavy to sustain the weight of a person stepping thereon Without givingeitherlongitudinallyortransversely. As shown, the bar -is plano-convex in transverse section the plane or straight side bei-ng lowermost and the convex` face uppermost. The pendent wings are comparatively light, as they serve only to close the longitudinal sides of the spaces formed between the bar 4 and the strips 2. v
Plates 8 are applied to the top side of the base l and have threaded openings 9 to receive the inner ends of the screws 7. Depressions l0 are formed in the base for the reception of the inner terminals of the screws. The movable section is adj usted by turning the screws 7 in the proper direction. Pins ll pass transversely through openings of the screws 7 and engage with the inner side or under face of the bar 4 to cause anl outward movement thereof when backing the setscrews 7.
By having the base l, the strips 2, andthe section 4 formed of wood the threshold can be placed upon the market of a maximum length and can be sawed transversely to make it lit between the jambs of any door-opening. Moreover, the parts can be readily assembled and fitted, the strips 2 being placed upon the edge portions of the base against the wings 5 and nailed or screwed to the base l, marginal portions of the latter extending beyond the strips 2 to receive the fastenings by means of which the threshold is secured to the sill;
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- As a new and improved article of manufacture, a threshold made up complete in maximum length ready for use and adapted to be readily cut down to iit between the jambs of any door, said threshold consisting of an elongated flat wooden base adapted to be secured to the floor or a sill and having depressions or recesses formed at intervals in its top side midway of its longitudinal edges, removable metallic plates secured to the top side of the base above said depressions and'having threaded openings, wooden strips secured to the upper side of the base in parallel relation and a short distance from its longitudinal edges leaving projecting marginal portions for the reception of the nails or other fastening means for securing the threshold to the sill or floor, a winged vertically-adjustable wooden bar of plano-convex cross-sectional form iitted between said strips, and adjust- IOO ing-screws having a swivel-joint connection l In testimony whereof I aTix my signature with said bar and fitted in the thresholdplates with their inner terminals extending into the depressions in the base, wherebysaid I 5 screws are movable in said depressions to adjust the bai' but do not project through the base, substantially as shown and described.
