(Cl. 49-434) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Parting bead means for use in a double hung window installation and including a rail-like parting bead member of substantially U-shaped cross section-one longitudinally extending edge portion of the U-sectioned parting bead member being embeddingly secured in a narrow groove extending along the inward face of a jamb member of the window frame and with the other longitudinally extending edge portion of the U-sectioned parting bead member being adapted to resiliently engage one of the window sashes.
This invention relates to parting bead means for operatively parting the upper sash and the lower sash in a double-sash window installation and for the Weatherstripping thereof.
In a typical wood-framed double-sash window installation a long narrow parting bead member or parting strip is employed to operatively part or separate the upper and low window sashes. Typically, in such wood-framed sash constructions horizontally and vertically extending grooves are provided respectively in the horizontal and vertical members of the window frame to receive the parting strips or parting bead members. Presently, the trend is to provide vertically extending opposingly arranged sash jamb Weatherstrip means along the opposite sides of the window sashes respectively between the window sashes and the side jambs of the window frame. When such construction as this is employed in a window installation, a horizontal parting strip member will be only used across the top of the window opening along the undersurface of the window frame head jamb member since the lateral disposed Weatherstrip means include vertical parting bead means.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide a metal or plastic extrudingly-formed parting bead member usable in place of the typical wood-strip parting bead.
It is a further object to provide such parting bead means which includes the forming of only a narrow grooveway in the window frame jamb member for securing the parting bead member; and to provide a much narrower grooveway than the parting bead grooveway in prior art jamb members; and thus to provide a stronger and more rigid jamb member. 7
A further object is to provide a sash jamb parting bead means operatively usable in a vertically extending disposition along a side of a window or in a horizontally extending disposition along the top of the window.
A further object is to provide a parting bead member having resilient Weatherstrip means inherent in the design of the member and such to provide a snug-fitting and weathertight sash installation.
A further object is to provide a sash easy to install, strong and durable.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects of the present invention are accomplished and the manner of their accomplishment may be readily understood with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

It is considered that perhaps the most important application of the structure of thepresent invention will be as parting bead means along the top of a window; therefore, in the drawings and in the following of the specifications, the invention is described in conjunction with a window frame head jamb member and as being the. parting bead means extending along the top of a window. Further, the inventive structure will be first described in the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
In FIG. 1 a horizontally directed head jamb member 11 provides abutment means for an upper sash member 13. The invention includes groove means formed in the head jamb including a pair of grooves indicated 15 and 17. For clarification, groove 15 will be considered as being a first groove and groove 17 as a second groove. The parting bead member is indicated by numeral 19 and includes basically a proximal portion 21, a distal portion 23 and a medial portion 25.
illustrating a modified jamb 11 with the outside flat surface 29 in parallel abutment with Wall surface 31 of groove 15. The oppositely directed resilience of barbed edge portion 27 securely holds proximal portion 21 in groove 15 and parting bead member 19 along head jamb 11.
Stop means are included in proximal portion 21 and includes a pair of stop portions 33, '35. Stop portions 33, 35 project respectively along the inwardly and outwardly disposed sides of proximal portion 21 and substantially perpendicularly therefrom. Stop portions 33, 35 engage respectively co-planar surfaces 37, 39 disposed on opposite sides of groove 15. The upper edge portion 41 of distal portion 23 is loosely received in second grooveway 17. Parting bead member distal portion 23 preferably additionally includes a rib portion adapted to engage sash frame surface 43 of upper sash 13. The rib portion preferably is defined by longitudinally extending oppositely arranged transversely concave and transversely convex surfaces 43, 45. Convex surface 45 disposed along the outward side of parting bead member 19 resiliently engages surface 43 of upper sash 13 and provides a snug and weathertight fit between the parting bead member and sash. A lower sash frame member, indicated by numeral 47, is illustrated in FIG. 1 in broken lines. Lower sash member 47 is shown in a fully-raised disposition with sash frame surface 49 in parallel engagement with proximal portion 21 of the parting bead member.
The second embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 3 and in conjunction with a head jamb member 51 and a sash 53. A modified parting bead member 55 is snugly secured in a grooved portion along the underside of the jamb member; the upper edge portion of proxinal portion 57 of parting bead member 55 is snugly fitted n grooveway 59. The barbed edge portion '61 of the proximal portion bears against the oppositely-disposed Walls 63, 65 of the grooveway and substantially permanently attaches the parting bead member to the head iamb. Parting bead member 55 is preferably provided with longitudinally extending oppositely-projecting stop portions 67, 69 corresponding substantially to stop pOI- tions 33, 35 of the first-described embodiment. Stop portions 67, 69 engage respectively co-planar surfaces 71, 73 disposed on opposite sides of grooveway 59. Parting bead member 55 preferably includes a longitudinally extending transversely-convex rib surface 75 extending along the outward side of distal portion 77. Medial portion 79 connecting proximal and distal portions 57, 77 resiliently urges convex rib surface 75 against sash frame surface 81. The end edge portion 83 of distal portion 77 preferably resiliently engages undersurface 71 of head jamb member 51. A lower sash member 85, shown in broken lines, is illustrated in a fully-raised position and engaging the proximal portion of the parting bead member.
The parting bead member of the present invention is formed of extruded metal or plastic and is Weather-resistant; it is economical to make and easy to install. The resilient weather-strip means inherent in the design of the parting bead member provides a snug-fitting sash installation. In replacing the prior art wooden-type parting stripa very narrow grooveway may be used thus providing a stronger sash frame jamb member. The sash parting bead construction is neat-appearing, strong and durable. Also, it eliminates the nailing and painting of the parting bead.
Although the present invention has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity and understanding, it is to be understood that it is not to be so limited since changes and modifications may be made therein which are within the full intended scope of this invention as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
1. In a double hung window installation including a rectangular frame supporting upper and lower sashes for reciprocal movement, said frame including at least one jamb member having a flat surface confronting the edges of said sashes, parting bead means disposed substantially between and operatively parting said upper and lower sashes comprising groove means formed in said jamb member including a narrow grooveway intersecting said flat surface of said jamb member and defining co-planar first and second surfaces disposed respectively on opposite sides of said grooveway and first and second parallel opposingly arranged grooveway wall surfaces; and a rail-like parting bead member including a proximal portion, a distal portion and a medial portion arranged in substantially 'U-shaped cross-sectional configuration and integrally secured in longitudinally uniform relationship, said proximal portion including longitudinally arranged barb means and longitudinally arranged stop means arranged generally parallel and in spaced relationship with said barb means, said distal portion including a longitudinal distal end edge portion, said parting bead member being securely attached to said jamb member with said barb means securely resiliently engaging at least one surface of said first and second opposingly arranged wall surfaces of said grooveway with said stop means engaging respectively said first and second co-planar surfaces of said jamb member, and with said longitudinal distal end edge portion being arranged contiguous and generally perpendicularly outwardly of said second surface of said first and second co-planar surfaces.
2. The parting bead means as defined in claim 1 further characterized in that said stop means includes a pair of integrally formed longitudinally uniform stop portions including an inward stop portion and an outward sto portion projecting substantially oppositely and extending respectively longitudinally along the inwardly disposed and outwardly disposed sides of said parting bead member proximal portion.

The parting bead means, as defined in claim 1 further characterized in that said barb means of said parting bead member proximal portion includes an integrally formed longitudinally uniform barbed edge portion extending along that side of said proximal portion disposed inwardly and towards said distal portion and with said barbed edge portion being resiliently engaged with said second wall surface of said grooveway.
4. The parting bead means as defined in claim 1 further characterized in that said parting bead member includes a longitudinally uniform transversely convex rib surface extending along the outward side of said distal portion defining substantially rib means adapted to resiliently engage said upper or said lower sash.
5. In a double hung window installation including a rectangular frame supporting upper and lower sashes for reciprocal movement, said frame including at least one jamb member having a flat surface confronting the edges of said sashes, parting bead means disposed between and operatively parting said upper and said lower sashes comprising groove means formed in said jamb member including a pair of narrow parallel grooveways including a first grooveway and a second grooveway respectively intersecting said flat surface of said jamb member and defining co-planar first, second and third surfaces and with said first grooveway being disposed between said first and second surfaces and said second grooveway being disposed between said second and third surfaces; and a raillike parting bead member including a proximal portion, a distal edge portion and a medial portion arranged substantially in U-shaped configuration and integrally secured in longitudinally uniform relationship, said proximal portion including barb means arranged along the longitudinal end portion of said proximal portion and stop means arranged longitudinally and in parallel spaced relationship to said barb means, said parting bead member being securely attached to said jamb member with said barb means being fitted in said first grooveway, with said stop means abuttingly engaging respectively said first and second co-planar surfaces of said jamb member, and with said distal edge portion being loosely received in said second grooveway.
6. The parting bead means as defined in claim 5 further characterized in that said distal edge portion of said parting bead member includes oppositely arranged longitudinally extending transversely concave and transversely convex surfaces disposed respectively along the inwardly disposed and outwardly disposed sides respectively of said parting bead member distal portion.

IN A DOUBLE HUNG WINDOW INSTALLATION INCLUDING A RECTANGULAR FRAME SUPPORTING UPPER AND LOWER SASHES FOR RECIPROCAL MOVEMENT, SAID FRAME INCLUDING AT LEAST ONE JAMB MEMBER HAVING A FLAT SURFACE CONFRONTING THE EDGES OF SAID SASHES, PARTING BEAD MEANS DISPOSED SUBSTANTIALLY BETWEEN AND OPERATIVELY PARTING SAID UPPER AND LOWER SASHES COMPRISING GROOVE MEANS FORMED IN SAID JAMB MEMBER INCLUDING A NARROW GROOVEWAY INTERSECTING SAID FLAT SURFACE OF SAID JAMB MEMBER AND DEFINING CO-PLANAR FIRST AND SECOND SURFACES DISPOSED RESPECTIVELY ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF SAID GROOVEWAY AND FIRST AND SECOND PARALLEL OPPOSINGLY ARRANGED GROOVEWAY WALL SURFACES; AND A RAIL-LIKE PARTING BEAD MEMBER INCLUDING A PROXIMAL PORTION, A DISTAL PORTION AND A MEDIAL PORTION ARRANGED IN SUBSTANTIALLY U-SHAPED CROSS-SECTIONAL CONFIGURATION AND INTEGRALLY SECURED IN LONGITUDINALLY UNIFORM RELATIONSHIP, SAID PROXIMAL PORTION INCLUDING LONGITUDINALLY ARRANGED BARB MEANS AND LONGITUDINALLY ARRANGED STOP MEANS ARRANGED GENERALLY PARALLEL AND IN SPACED RELATIONSHIP WITH SAID BARB MEANS, SAID DISTAL PORTION INCLUDING A LONGITUDINAL DISTAL END EDGE PORTION, SAID PARTING BEAD MEMBER BEING SECURELY ATTACHED TO SAID JAMB MEMBER WITH SAID BARB MEANS SECURELY RESILIENTLY ENGAGING AT LEAST ONE SURFACE OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND OPPOSINGLY ARRANGED WALL SURFACES OF SAID GROOVEWAY WITH SAID STOP MEANS ENGAGING RESPECTIVELY SAID FIRST AND SECOND CO-PLANAR SURFACES OF SAID JAMB MEMBER, AND WITH SAID LONGITUDINAL DISTAL END EDGE PORTION BEING ARRANGED CONTIGUOUS AND GENERALLY PERPENDICULARLY OUTWARDLY OF SAID SECOND SURFACE OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND CO-PLANAR SURFACES.
