Description
Patented Apr.. 3, 11902.
L. J. BURD K.
. Wit Ses:
UNITED STATES LEO J. BURDICK, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,936, dated April 8, 1902.
Application filed January 8, 1901. Serial No. 41,957. (No model.)
To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO J. BURDIC-K, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes, particularly to boxes of pasteboard or similar sheet material.
The objects of the invention are to provide a box which shall be without projecting seams or rough lap-joints both on the inside and outside and also to provide a box which shall be strong and durable and at the same time be formed of a blank that will economize in material and to provide a box cheap and one easy to manufacture.
Still further objects will definitely appear in the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a detailed perspective view of a box, with a portion of one wall broken away to show the details of construction, embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical detail sectional view of my improved box, showing the method of forming the ends. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank which forms the bottom and sides of my improved box.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawin gs, A is the bottom; A A, the sides. These are formed in one piece scored or creased to fold at the proper points. On the ends of the bottom and sides are flaps a, formed from part of the same by scores or creases.
flaps a are notched at a. by the pieces B and B.
Having pointed out the parts of my improved box, I will now describe the construc- The The end is formed tion in detail. In forming the same the sides are folded in position and the flaps a are folded at right angles thereof, the notches a being of such size and shape as to permit this. The inner end piece B, which is of the proper dimension to fit in interior cross-section of the box, is then put into place and there secured by glue or similar means to the inside of the flaps a. The piece 13, which is of proper dimensions to fit the space between the flaps a, is then secured in position. The box is then complete. Any covering may be added which is desirable.
It will be noted that both the interior and exterior of the box are without seams or rough lap-joints formed by the union of the parts of which the box is made. The advantages of such a structure are readily apparent. It will further be noted that the piece 13 serves to brace the sides and bottom and forms a very strong structure. It will be noted that the piece B is also in position to serve as a brace.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a box, the combination of the bottom A; sides A A, said bottom and sides being formed of a single piece suitably scored, and having flaps a on each end adaptedto fold, said flaps being suitably notched at at; end piece B, secured on the inner faces of said flaps; and end piece B fitted and secured between the edges of said flaps, for the purpose specified.
2. In a box, the combination of the bottom and side pieces with flaps on each end thereof; an end piece of a size and shape to fit inside of said box secured on the inner faces of said fiaps; and an exterior end piece of a size and shape to fit between the edges of the said flaps secured to the same, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
LEO J. BURDICK. [L.
