SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,470, dated April 1, 1902. Application filed November 26,1901. Serial No. 83,774. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM A.IvIOl\IECHAN, a citizen-of the United States, residing at St. Olairsville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention provides a brush of novel construction for use in lavatories, especially when bathing, to enable the person reaching the back and shoulders for stimulating the action of the skin or other purpose.
The brush may be of any size and form and is manipulated by means of a pair of handles loosely connected to opposite. ends thereof, this being essential to allow for the variety of movement incident to the use of the brush.
Fora full description of the invention and the merits thereof, and also to acquire a know1- edge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and drawing hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic featu res of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view.
The brush is provided with handles 1, loosely connected to opposite ends thereof, so as to allow for relative movement of the brush and handles in every conceivable direction, this being essential to the successful and convenient use of the article. The handles have their inner end portions 2 bent and arranged so as to extend inward, thereby admitting of the outer portion of the handles extending about at a right angle to the brush. This construction admits of the brush being manipulated by the user, so as to reach every part of the back and shoulders without causinginconvenience or any straining of the arms or muscles in an effort to reach anydesircd part of the shoulders, back, or other portion of the body.
As shown, the brush 3 is rotary and the brush material consists of tufts, although it is contemplated to apply to the brush-body material of any variety and kind. A wire or rod 6 passes loosely through the brush and has eyes 7 at its ends, and the bent ends of the handles 1 are looped therein, metal strips 5 being fitted thereto and having their folded portions received in the said eyes 7'. While it is preferred to have the handles 1 of wood and supplied with metal ends 5, it is to be understood that the handles may be of metal or other material and have loose connection with the brush in any desired way.
In the use of the article the brush is manipulated by means of the handles 1, the latter coming upon opposite sides of the user, so as to be conveniently grasped in front of the person with the brush in the back, and by deftly manipulating the handles the brush may be brought in contact with every part of the back and shoulders,- so as to effect the desired result. It is not essential that the handles occupy the same relative position, as the loose connection between them and the brush provides for a variety of adjustment and positioning of the parts, such as is attendant upon the use of an article of this type.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- I An article of toilet, substantially as specified, the same consisting of a rotary brush, and handles having their inner end portions bent toward each other and loosely connected with the brush to admit of free rotation and independent play thereof, substantially as specified.
