UNrrED STATE-s ORVILLE B. L nens PATENT 'fOF G S, OF AKRON, OHIO.
UNITARY MATCH-SAFE AND CIGAR-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1 l'0. $96,337, dated March 25, 1902.
Application filed May 29, 1901.
To LtZZ whom, it incty oolwerm Be it known that I, ORVILLEB'. Huermma citizen of the United States, residing at Akron; in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Unitary Match-Safes and Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to unitary matchsafes and cigar-lighters.
The object of the invention is to provide a match-safe or match-carrier'of considerable capacity and a lighter for cigars and other.
purposes.
According to my inventiona pocket article is provided of a capacity. equal to or greater than that of a box of matches, thesame being cylindrical and of a length'and size for con-f venient handling and easy carriage in the pocket of a user. 7 V
The invention consists in the combination of an outer cylindrical case, an axial'matchholder consisting of a drum orrollerprovided with match seats or sockets, and an igniter having a flame-guard and chimney or flamefiue leading laterally through the side of the case.
It also consists in other combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure'l is a perspective view showing my invention complete and ready for use; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same. Figs?) isa cross-section showing the radial arrangement of matches in theirsockets, the igniter, the flame-guard, and the. flame-flue. Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective of the igniter and flame-flue, and Fig. 5 is a" detail section showing the match-socket.
Like numerals of reference denote like partsin all the figures of the drawings.
6 is the casing, made cylindrical,- having a step-bearing 7 for the axial match-drum and a cap or part 8 to close the open end. The cap 8 also has a bearing 9 for the outer end of the match-holding drum. The casing is provided with a longitudinal slot 1.0 in one side, in which is fitted to slide a combined igniter 11, flame-guard 12, and flame-flue 13.
The match-holder 14 may be a cylindrical or polygonal drum or roller. This may be made of metal, as shown, or it may be a sim- Serial No. 62,421. (No model.)
Vple wooden roller. This holder 14 is pro vided with a large number or series of annularly-arranged match seats or sockets 15, as
clearly shownin the drawings.
The flame-flue 13, fitted to slide in the slot 10, carries the igniter 11, consisting of a roughened or sanded plate arranged in the path of the matches as they are rotated by the hand-wheel 16 of the holder 14. The flame-guard consists of a hinged fiap 12 and prevents the flame from spreading and igniting other matches.
In operation, the holder-sockets being filled with matches and the holder being arranged in positionlwith'anfann'ular row of matches in the plan'eotthe flame-flue, the operator, through hand wheel; 16, turns the holder slightly, bringing the head of the match acrosstheigniter. Amatch is thus ignited, and'theflame thereot'is brought in line with the flame-flue and projects through the side of thecasing, where it'rhay be applied to light ing a cigar or other substance. When one radial row of matches has been exhausted, the sliding flame-flue, with its appendages, is moved along the slot to register with or come opposite another row, and so on until all the rows have been ignited or exhausted.
It should be noted that ordinary wooden matches, Wax tapers, or Y specially-prepared 'igniters may be used in connection with my improved device without'de'parting from the invention. f
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is r 1. The combination with a cylindrical casing having a longitudinal slot, of a revoluble match-holding shaft arranged in the casing having match-holding sockets arranged in radial and axial lines, and a flame-flue car rying an igniter and flame-guard slidably mounted in the slot in the casing? A,
2. The combination with a cylindricalcasing having a longitudinal slot, of a revoluble match-holding drum arranged in the casing having match-holding sockets arranged in radial and axial lines, a flame-flue carrying an igniter slidably along the slot in the easing, that it may be brought over any radial line of matches and a flame-guard hinged to such flame-flue.
3. The combination with a cylindrical casing having a longitudinal slot, of a revoluble match-holding drum arranged in the casing having match-holding sockets arranged in radial and axial lines, a flame-flue slidable along the slot in the casing that it may be brought over any radial line of matches, an igniter secured to the said flue and arranged to lie in the path of the matches as they are rotated, and a flameguard hinged to said flame-flue.
4:. The combination with a cylindrical casing having a longitudinal slot, of a revoluble match-holding drum arranged in the casing having match-holding sockets arranged in radial and axial lines, and an adjustable ig- M. B. PECK, G. '1. CARR.
