HAT TIP OR LINING.
SPECIFICATION forrm ng part of Letters Patent No. 695,853, dated March 18, 1902. Application filed November 29, 1901. Serial No. 84,032. (No model.)
To all whom it nmy concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAUDIUS F. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Tips or Linings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat tips or linings; and its object is to provide a hat tip or lining such that when placed within a hat it will be maintained therein by its own means and conform to the interior conformation of the hat.
My invention is particularly applicable to that class of soft hats known as Alpine and Fedora hats, wherein the crown is centrally and longitudinally depressed. Heretofore linings have been secured to the crown of hats by pasting or sewing the same therein; but this method is objectionable in many ways and in the case of soft hats having the crown indented as above described is ineflicient and inapplicable.
In stiff hats it is customary and desirable to secure in the crown thereof a hat-tip for the purpose of indicating the name, maker, quality, 850., of the hat; but in soft hats with a depressed crown this desideratum had not before been effectually or satisfactorily accomplishedl My invention obviates these difficulties and objections and provides a tip or lining adapted to maintain itself against the crown of a hat and conform to the conformation 'of the crown, said tip or lining being adapted to fit the depressed crown of a soft hat and to carry thereon a hat-tip or, in lieu thereof, indications showing name, maker, quality, &c., of the hat.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, designating the parts by numerals and referring to like parts by like numerals. V
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, and Fig. 2 shows the same fitted in the crown of a soft centrally-indented hat and conforming to the shape thereof.
More specifically, 1 is a strip of cloth or other suitable material, said strip being preferably narrower at its central portion than at its ends. Along the two side edges of the strip 1 I attach flexible stiffeningstrips 2,said strips being made from a reed of bamboo or other suitable material. These stiffening-strips preferably are of about the size of an ordinary broom-straw and have merely sufficient strength to hold the lining up in the crown of the hat, while allowing the top of the hat to be depressed or knocked in to any extent or in any way that may be desired. The strips 2 being flexible permit the strip 1 to conform to the shape of the crown of a hat in which said strip is placed, while being of sufficient stiffness to hold the strip 1 in place against the crown, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
I fit my hat tip or lining in a hat by placing the ends thereof under the sweat-band or securing them in any other suitable manner.
What I claim is- A hat tip or lining for soft hats of Alpine form, consisting of a strip of flexible material, narrower at its central portion than at its ends and provided with flexible stiifening-strips along the two side edges thereof, whereby when the ends of said lining are inserted between the sweat-band and the adjacent sides of a hat, said lining will conform to the shape of the hat.
Signed by me at New York, county and State of New York, this 25th day of November, 1901.
OLAUDIUS F. BEATTY.
