WASHBOILER ATTACHMENT.'
SEECIFIUATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 695,766, dated March 18, 1902. Application iiled April 13, 1901. Serial No. 55,640. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY C. SONNEBORN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Laporte, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved IVashboiler Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for lifting clothes from a washboiler; and the object is to provide a device for this purpose of simple construction and so arranged that upon lifting the device it will operate to squeeze a portion of the water out of the clothes; and a further object is to provide an attachment for the boiler from which the lifter may be suspended to permit draining of the clothes.
I will describe a clothes-lifter embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure lis a sectional view showing a washboiler with lifting devices and a support or suspending device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lifter, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the lifter as suspended for drainage. Fig. 4t is a fragmentary View showing the hooks engaging the rim of the boiler.
In practice there will be a number of lifting devices arranged in a washboiler one above another. Each lifting device consists of two plate-like sections l 2, hinged together at the center, as at 3, and these plates are perforated. Having swinging connection with each plate at the end is a suspending device consisting of a rod of metal 4, having divergent members, and at the upper ends these suspending devices are formed into hook-shaped eyes 5 for engaging over the top of the washboiler oc. It will be noted that the suspending devices for the different lifters are of different lengths-that is, the suspending devices for the lifter arranged in the bottom of the boiler are longer than the suspending devices for the one directly above it,while the suspending devices for the middle lifter are longer than the suspending devices for the upper lifter.
The support for the lifters consists of a bar formed in two telescopic sections 6 7, so that In operation the lower lifting device is to be placed in the boiler, the clothes placed thereon, then the next one of the series is to be suspended in place and clothes placed thereon, and at last the upper one is to be placed in position with clothes thereon. As the upper and middle device will rest upon the clothing below them they will be pre vented from materially sagging at the center; but even if they did sag at the center there would be no dierence in operation. After boiling the clothes the upper lifter is to be lifted out with the clothes thereon, and. during this motion the two plates will be swung together or toward each other to press or squeeze water outof the clothing supported on the device, then by engaging the suspending devices 4 with the hooks ll and l2 the holder will be supported above the washboiler, so that water may drain through the perforations of the plates into the boiler. After being sufficiently drained the clothes may be carried to the washtub.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A washboiler attachment comprising a plurality of members made up of pairs of rigid plates hinged together and adapted to be located one above the other for the purpose of supporting clothes, said plates being suspended by hooks of different lengths, said hooks normally engaging the rim of the boiler,
and a. frame mounted upon the rim of the boiler and provided with depending hooks for engaging said hooks of dierent lengths, the arrangement being such that said rigid plates successively fold toward each other and exert pressure upon the clothes as said members are successively raised and suspended.
n testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of Io two subscrlbing Witnesses.
MARY C. SONNEBORN.
