A TTOR/VEY' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX SOHIRM, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY.
PROCESS OFoRNAMENTlNG WOOD BY FIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,417, dated March 11, 1902.
Application filed October 16, 1901. Serial No. 78,882. (Nospecimens) To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, MAX SOHIRM, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Dusseldorf, Rhenish Prussia,Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Proce esses of Ornamenting Wood'loy Fire, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the ornamentation of wood surfaces; and it consists in an improved process whereby-the natural grain ofthe wood is brought into relief by covering portions of the wood and the application of a jet of fire or flame to the uncovered portions, which consumes the spongy or soft portions and-leaves the solid veins in relief.
The invention further consists in the further development of said process by supplying iron-file dust to the flame or jet, whereby said dust is made to impinge upon the wood in a state of incandescence. p
The invention further consists in the further development of said process by covering parts of the wood surface of any desired configuration with sheets or patterns of a suitable fireproof material.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a piece of wood as it appears after having been submitted to my process, in which drawings" Figure 1 is a face view, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, a indicates the soft or spongy portions of the wood, which alternate with the solid veins or ribs b. Portions of the surface which have been untouched are indicated at d. p
In carrying out my invention I may simply tion of the spongy parts, or I may cover any 1 part of the surface with sheets of suitable fireproof material before submitting it to the flame, in which event those parts covered will remain unaffected by the fire. By making .these coverings of ornamental configuration a very pleasing effect is produced. I have also found that the operation is greatly facilitated by supplying minute metallic particles, such as dust from iron-filing, to the fire-jet, such particles being thus thrown against the wood in a glowing or incandescent state, whereby the spongy parts are much more. quickly removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, 5 5 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the'United States, is-
1. A process for ornamenting wood sur faces comprising'the covering of part of the surfacewith fireproof material and the subon mission of the uncovered parts of such sur faces to the action of a fire-blast or jet-flame, substantially as described.
2. A process for ornamenting wood surfaces comprising the supplying of minute par- 6 5 ticles of metal to a fire-blast or jet-flame, and causing said blast or flame to impinge upon I the. surface to be ornamented, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses. I
' MAX SOHIRM.
