UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSEL W. MONROE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-LOG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,015, dated October 25, 1898. Application filed November 6, 1895. Serial No. 568,089. (No model.)
To allA whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANSEL W. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Logs,which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciication and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in gas-logs or heating devices; and it consists in forming such logs of ahollow body of metal and a coating of non-inflammable or lireproof material in imitation of bark and knots, the article thus being light owing to the metal employed for the body and strong and durable owing to the incasement of the body by the coating thereon.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a gas-log embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a gas-log which is adapted for heating purposes and consists of a hollow body, the face of which simulates sticks of wood, said body being adapted to be supplied with gas, which is discharged through jet-openings in said face and which when ignited imparts to the body the appearance of a wood tire, as well known in articles of the class.
In the present case the body is formed of cast, Wrought, or sheet metal, which may be formed in one piece or in several pieces, tongued and grooved and bolted together with separate or integral caps B on the end'of the same; but sheet metal is preferred, as it may be easily bent into shape of a hollow body, and, owing to its lightness, it overcomes the objections to the cumbersome articles of the class as heretofore made. On the body is a coating of non-inflammable or ireproof material, which is composed of silicate of potassium, with pulverized terra-cotta, asbestos, slate, flint, and glass, and coloring-matter or mineral wool or iron slag in lieu of asbestos. In
lieu of the terra-cotta, slate, liint, and glass I may use sand, pulverized porcelain, pyrites, or pumicestone, the preferred ingredients being silicate of potassium, iron slag, known as mineral wool, asbestos, and terra-cotta, porcelain, or other earthenware in pulverized condition. The coloring-matter may be umber, lampblack, or any other suitable pigments. The ingredients selected are mixed with a small quantity of linseed-oil in the proportion of about one-eighth of a pint of the latter to ve pounds of said ingredients, making a plastic mass, which. is properly spread on the body of the log, producing as much as possible the appearance of bark, knots, duc., of simulated sticks of wood, which constitute the face of said body. The mass also cements the joints and seams of the body and makes the same gas-tight,'it being likewise non-iniiammable or ireproof, so that it protects the body from being burned out, and, owing to the asbestos, it may become partly or entirely incandescent, thus increasing the appearance of a wood fire when the gas is lighted and adding heat to the mass, it being also noticed that the coating provides an incasement for the body of the gas-log, the same strengthening said body, which when made of sheet metal is light.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gas-log formed of a hollow metallic body, and an incasement therefor, the latter consisting of a coating of non-iniiammable material in imitation of a stick of wood.
2. In a gas-log having a hollow metallic body, an incasement for said body, consisting of a coating composed of silicate of potassium and powdered mineral matter.
3. A gas-log formed of a hollow metallic body, and an incasement therefor, consisting 'of a coating composed of silicate of potassium and pulverized iron slag, asbestos and earthenware.
ANSEL W. MONROE.
