UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
eus WILFRED ANDERSON, orvB'LooMiNeroN, ILLINOIS.
SFASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,816, dated March 4, 1902.
Application filed J' une 10, 19701.
To all wiz/m t may 0011.057412,..-
Be it known that I, Gus WILFRED ANDER- SON, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in thecounty of McLean and State of Illinois, have'in-vented a new and useful Sash-Lock, of which the following is a specification. Y
The invention relates to improvements vin sash-locks.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of sash-fasteners and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efflcient one designed to be mounted on the top of the lower 'sash at one side of a window` and capable of simultaneously engaging the upper sash and the window-frame, whereby the sashes are securely held in their closed position.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of a Window provided with a sash-fastener constructed inY accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, the top of the casing being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional vienr on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a de-l tail perspective view` of the oscillatory plate or lever. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the bolts. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the exterior grip or handle.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the tigu res of the drawings.
1 and 2 designate sliding bolts arranged at right angles to each other and mounted Within suitable Ways of a casing 3 and adapted to be simultaneously reciprocated by a plate or lever 4, which is 'pivotally mounted Within the casing. The casing, which may be constructed in any suitable manner, consists,
preferably, of a bottom plate 4 and a top or cap 5, which receives the bottom plate and which is secured tothe same by screws f or other suitable fastening devices 6, which also secure the sash-fastener to the top of a lower sash 7, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The reciprocating bolts are' provided at their inner edges with 4reciprocating bolts 1 and 2.
Serial No. 63,964. (No model.)
Anotches 8 and 9, and they have lugs or studs face, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The enf `largement 16 forms projecting 4portions or lugs 17 and 18 for engaging the notches of the plate or lever engages the studs and 11 to l extend the bolts, and the projections or lugs of the lower face of the plate or lever engage the notches of the Vbolts to return the latter. The boss 14 is rounded, as clearly illustrated in Fig of the drawings, to assist in pivoting the plate or lever, which is provided at its upper face with an annular boss or enlargement 19, having opposite projections or lugs 2O to engage corresponding Vrecesses 21 of an exterior handle or grip 22. The handle or grip 22, which is adapted to be oscillated to reciprocate the bolts, is arranged on top ofthe casin g, and it is rigid with the pivot}15, which extends through the casing and the oscillaf tory lever. The pivot has its lower end threaded for the reception of a nut, and a washer is preferablyinterpos'ed between the nut and the bottom plate of the casing.
The annular boss or enlargement 19 of the upper face of the plate or lever forms a support for a spiral spring 23, which is interposed between the plate or lever and the handle or grip to hold the former in proper position with relation to the sliding bolts, and the interlocking engagement of the lugs 20 and the opposite recesses 21 permit a limited movea ment of the plate or lever on the pivot sumcient to hold the said plate or lever against the bolts without disengaging the same from the grip or handle. Y Y
The upper sash 24 is provided ywith a suitable socket 25 and the window-frame is provided With a similar socket 26, and these sockets are adapted to receive the engaging outer ends of the bolts when the latter are extended, as, indicated in Fig. 1 of the draw ings. When the grip or handle is oscillated, it carries with it the plate or lever, which reciprocates the sliding bolts to carry them into and out of engagement with the upper The oscillatory- IOO sash and the Window-frame. By mounting the sash-fastener on the topof the lower sash and engaging the upper sash andthe windowframe it Will be apparent that both sashes are securely held in their closed position.
It Will be seen that the sash-fastener is simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that it is adapted to be readily mounted on the lower sash of a window and is capable of being easily operated to reciprocate the sliding bolts. It Will also be apparent that the sliding bolts are simultaneously reciprocated and that when in engagement with the nppersash and the window-frame they firmly lock the sashes against movement.
What I claim isl. A sash-fastener comprising a casing, reciprocating bolts provided at their side edges with notches and having studs,`an oscillatory plate orlever mounted in the'casing and provided Wth openings to receive the studs and having eccentric enlargementsfor engaging the notches, and means for operating the plate or lever, substantially as described.
2. A sash-fastener comprising a casing, reciprocating bolts provided with notches and having studs, an oscillatory plate or lever having openings to receive the studs and provided With projections arranged to engage the notches, said plate or lever having a perforation and provided at opposite sides of the same With lugs, an exterior grip or handle having recesses receiving the lugs and provided with a pivot passing through the perforation of the plate or lever, and a spring interposed between the plate or lever and the grip or handle, substantially as described.
3. A sash-fastener comprising a casing, reciprocating bolts, an oscillatory plate or lever engaging the bolts and having a perforation, said plate or lever being provided at the perforation with an annular enlargement and having lugs extending therefrom, an eXterior grip or handle having recesses to receive the lugs, and provided With a pivot passing through the perforation, and a coiled spring disposed on the annular enlargement and interposed between the plate orlever and the grip or handle, substantially as described.
4. Asash-fastener comprisingacasinghaving a tapering boss 14, reciprocating bolts, a plate or lever connected with the bolts and provided with a flared opening to receive the boss 14 and having an annular enlargement provided With lugs, agrip or handleprovide'd with recesses to receive the lugs and having a pivot passing through the casing and through the said opening, and a coiled spring disposed on the annular enlargement and engaging the plate or lever and the grip or handle, substantially` as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
GUS WILFRED ANDERSON.
