To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC M. DEPPEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rl`his invention relates to improvements in sash fasteners.
One object of the invention is to provide a sash fastener having an improved construction and arrangement of locking mechanism, whereby the upper or lower sash may be secured in closed or partly open positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sash fastener of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation, and having means whereby the same may be positively secured against outside interference.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section of an upper and part of a lower sash, showing my improved fastener applied thereto, and in an inoperative position; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the meeting rails of two sashes showing the fastener secured in a locked position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. a is a plan view of the attaching plate for the fastener.
My improved fastener comprises an attaching plate 1 adapted to be secured to the top of the upper cross bar A of the lower sash by means of screws or other suitable fastening devices, as shown. In the outer end of the plate 1 is formed a circular opening 2 and a slot 3 which opens throughV the end of the plate and connects with the opening 2. In the plate 1 is formed a centrally disposed threaded hole 1 into which is screwed the reduced threaded lower end of a screw stud 5. The stud 5 is of suitable length and has on its upper end a head 6 and preferably has its threaded end riveted or upset in the plate 1, thus rigidly fastening the stud in place.
On the stud 5 is loosely mounted an operating plate or lever 7, said lever or plate having formed therein a stud engaging aperture 8, the upper and lower ends of which are ared as shown, whereby the plate is permitted to have a rocking as well as a sliding movement on the stud. In the outer end of the plate or lever is formed a notch 9, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. On the stud 5 between the plate or lever 7 and the attaching plate 1 is arranged a coiled spring 10, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
At the right hand side of the upper sash and extending a short distance` above the lower sash is a locking rod 11. rIhe rod 11 is spaced a suitable distance from the upper sash and has its lower end secured to the lower rail of the same by bending said end at right angles and forming thereon barbs, thus providing a rail or fastening member 12 which is driven into said lower rail of the sash, as shown. The upper end of the rod is secured to the side bar of and spaced from the adjacent portion of the upper sash by an attaching pin 13 the outer end of which is reduced and riveted in the upper end of the rod. In assembling the parts, the opening 2 in the plate 1 is engaged with the upper end of and slipped down on the rod, the slot 3 permitting the plate to pass the pin 13.
When the part-s are thus assembled, the notched end of the plate or lever 7 will be forced against the rod 11 by the action of the spring 10 and the rod forced against the walls of the opening 2 in the plate, thus causing these parts to bind and eectively hold the sashes in closed or open position. In order to release the parts to permit the sashes to be opened or closed the outer end of the plate or lever 7 is depressed, thus swinging the notched inner end of the same out of engagement with the rod 11.
In order to lock the plate or lever 7 against movement and thus positively prevent the operation of the fastener, a stop screw 14 is arranged in the outer portion of the plate, said screw being adapted to be screwed down into engagement with the plate 1, thus holding the plate or lever 7 in rigid engagement with the head of the stud.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operationof the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation;
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined and claimed.
Having thus describedl my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a sash fastener of the character described, an att-aching plate adapted to be secured to the lower sash, said plate having therein a locking opening, a locking rod secured to the upper sash and having a sliding engagement with the opening in said attaching plate, a stud .secured to the latter, a lever loosely mounted on said stud, a spring on lsaid stud to force said lever into engagement with said locking rod and the latter into engagement with the walls of the opening in said attaching plate, whereby the sashes are fastened in closed or open position, and means to fasten said lever in locked position. l
