iTnn STATES GEORGE IV. ROMAINE,
ATnNT OFFICE.I
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PLACKET-CLOSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,628, dated February 18, 1902. Application filed September 9, 1901. Serial No. 74,777l (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROMAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Placket-Olosers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates especially to devices employed for closing the openings in garments at the meeting parts thereof, and has for its object the provision of a cheap, sim ple, and effective device for closing the plackets in dress-skirts and the like.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in a plate of metal having a longitudinal slot extending for a part of the length ofthe plate, the body of the plate having a bent or curved portion near the center of the slot and at right angles thereto, said plate being secured to one flap of the placket to be closed, in combination with a button or stud secured to the opposite Hap of the placket and arranged to engage the slot in the plate, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying' drawings", forming a part hereof, Figure l is a plan view of the slotted plate of myinvention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. et a plan View, of the button or stud. Fig. 5 is a View of a fragment ot a placket, the parts of my closer being shown in dotted lines. Fig. G is a vertical sectional view at line of Fig. 5.
Similar numerals of reference Wherever they occurindicate corresponding parts in all the igures.
l is the body of the plate, made of any approved material and having a longitudinal slot 2 therein, open at the upper part and constricted near its center, the lower end of the slot terminating' in an enlargement 3.
4 represents perforations for the reception of thread for securing the plate to the fabric of a garment.
6 is the bent or curved portion ot' the plate.
7 represents the belt of. a skirt, and 8 and 9 the iaps of the placket. The plate l is secured to one of the iiap's in a vertical position and a button or stud 5 to the opposite flap in the proper relative position to the plate, using as many plates and buttons or studs as the adequate closing of the placket may require.
In closing the placket the wide portion of the slot in the plate permits the easy introduction of the shank of the button or stud, the shank being preferably thicker than the width of the constricted part ot' the slot, and in its passage downward the spring ot' the metal of the plate permits the two prongs to spread, the shank of the button or stud tinally coming to rest at the enlarged extremity ot the slot below the curved raise of the metal of the plate. When the parts are all in the positions indicated in Figs. 5 and C and the skirt is raised, the curve of the plate and the spring of the metal ettectually prevent the escape of the shank of the button or stud from the plate, and if the pull is to either side the enlargement at the bottom ot' the slot assists in keeping the parts in position, thus positivelypreventing the opening of the placket.
Having now fully described myinvention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. A placket-closer in which is comprised a plate of metal having a transverse curved or bent portion and provided with a longitudinal slot extending through the curved or bent portion of the plate and open at one end and constricted near its center, in combination with a button or stud adapted and arranged to engage in said slot, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a placketcloser, a plate of metal having a transverse curved or bent portion and alongitudinal slot extending through the bent or curved portion ot' the plate and open at one end, constricted near its center, and enlarged at the extremity opposite to the opening, in combination with a button or stud adapted and arranged to engage in the slot in the plate, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a placket-closer the combination with a stud, of a catch device with which the stud engages having a longitudinal slot, the opposite sides of the slot being throughout aportion of their course curved or bent in a substantially similar manner, whereby they remain substantially parallel with each other,
While the course of the slot is diverted, subbent out of such piane, substantially as set Io stantialiy as set forth. forth.
4. In a placket-closer the combination with Signed by me at New York this 6th day of a. stud, cfaJ catch device with which the stud September, 1901. 5 engages having a longitudinal slot formed therein, the portions of the plate in which the GEORGE W ROMAINE' opposite ends of the slot are formed being in Witnesses: substantially the same plane and the inter- LOUIS F. BRAUN,
mediate slotted portion of the plate being A. M. PIERCE.
