Be it known that I, ALFRED HARRIS, acitizen ofthe United States, residing atCalumet, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Miner-s l-Iat, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a miners hat; and the object of the invention is to provide an article suitable to be worn by miners-while at work in a mine or whileascending or de scending the same and is adapted to prevent water, dirt, and other vsubstances from lodging in the hair, ears, vand down the wearers neck.

Another object is to provide an article to protect the ears and neck from cold and also to lessen the effect of the report of explosives used in blasting and which is so conducive to deafness. l

With these objects in view my invention consists, essentially, in providing a cap nwith a dependingflap, of rubber, adapted to encircle the upper portion of the head, said flap having a supplemental extension adapted to cover the ears and back of the head, the main flap being adapted to be folded up against the rim of the hat and the su pplemental rim folded inside the crown of the hat.

The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be vfully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming part of this speciication, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a-sectional view of a hat, the attachment being folded. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken through the supporting-bracket.

In the practical application of my invention I employ a hat A, having a stiff brim B; A depending Iiap, preferably of rubber, is attached to the inner edge of the rim and is adapted to extend around theforehead and the rear portion of the head which is below `flap being arranged at the rear of the main iiap and adapted toV cover and protect the ears, the back of the head, and the neckof,

the wearer. A wire band E is located inthe lower edge of the main flap C. `When in use,the wire band will hold the liap snug to the head,

and thereby prevent water and dirt getting into the hair or down the neck of the wearer, and the supplemental flap covering the ears will prevent the ears being injured by explobracket or support consisting, essentially, of

a tubular casing F, essentially rectangular in cross-section and having a bow-shaped leafspring G arranged vertically therein, the bow portion of the spring bearing against the rear member of the tubular casing.

Vhen it is desired to remove the lamp, the spring is pressed forwardly and the hook moved upwardly to such a point that it can be disengaged from the locking-tongue upon the upper end of the spring.

It will thus be seen that I providea simple and efficient construction of miners hat which will securely hold the lamp in position and will also protect the miner from dirt, water, and also from the effects of explosions.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireV to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hat of the kind described, having a depending flap of rubber or other material, a supplemental liap of soft rubber and an encircling wire band arranged at the juncture of the main and supplemental flaps, substantially as shown and described.
