UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. BROWNE, OF KINGSTON, NEW YORK.
ICE-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,829, dated January 7, 1902.
p spoliation moa Novombor 2s, 1900. serial no. 37.486. (No nodoi.) 4
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM G. BEowNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to ice-picks.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of ice-pick blade by means of which ice may be more expeditiously cut or chipped.
With this ohj'ect in View the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l isV a perspective View of one form ol my improved icp-pick. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through the blade of the pick. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view illustratinga modification of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of blade.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1, 2, and
3, the numeral l denotes the handle of the p blade toward the end thereof contract orde-1 crease to forina'concave conical-shaped poin'ted end. The edges of the blade are made iiat, as shown at a., whereby the bladecan be grasped by one hand without injury to the same for the purpose of cracking a piece or lump of ice held in the other hand by means of the handle ofthe implement. The handle, as shown in Fig. 1, is made of an approximately ball-shaped outer end b, whereby to give weight thereto when cracking of the ice is to be accomplished. The interior or central portion of the handle has formed therein an angular longitudinal recess which is substantially of the same construction as that shown by the rear portion of the blade, which is mounted in said recess, the inner en d of which abuts against a shoulder a at the terminus of the recess.- In Fig. 2 I show the handle made in sections, the semicircnlar recess being formed in one section concave and the other convex, the two sections, with the inclosed part of the blade, being secured ltogether by means of pins or bolts a a2, passing through the two sections and through said inclosed part of the blade.
The pick may be used like the ordinary pick and will reduce to a minimum the liability ot' vit slipping or iiying off to one side in striking the ice until it isl substantially parallel to the' surface thereof and is reciprocated.
In Fig. 4 I have shown my invention applied to a hammer-handle-a handle which is reciprocated independently of the blade and which imparts blows or shocks thereto to force the same through the ice.
In Fig. 5 the blade is shown ot' V-shaped cross-section.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
The device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed and may be placed upon the-market at a comparatively small cost.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is
In an ice-pick, the combination with the handle having an approximately ball-shaped outer end, said handle constructed in sections,
one of which is concave, the other, convex, whereby to form a semlcircular recess between said sections, of a semicircular blade,
having flat edge portions mounted in the re- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set cess formed by said concave and convex seomy hand in presence of two subscribing Wittons, and pins or bolts for securing said secnesses.
