SPEGEFICATION forming part of Letters yatent No. 689,1 15, dated December 17, 1901.
Application filed January 26, 1901. Serial No. 44,868. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, RoswELL- L. PEABODY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of watch known as full plate; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of parts of the dial and front frame-plate. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line 00 a: in Fig. l and showing also portions of the case and the glass cover. Fig. 3 is a plan view of aportion of the frame-plate. Fig. 4 is a crosssection taken on the line y y in Fig. 3.
A is a circular frame-plate or pillar-plate which constitutes the front of the frame of the watch.
B is the hands arbor, which projects centrally. through a bearing in the plate A.
O is the dial-plate, which comes next above the plate A.
D is a portion of the watchcase, and E is the glass cover or watch-crystal, which is carried by the case over the dial and hands in the usual manner.
The front plate is provided with a projecting rib at around its periphery, and it has a hole b, through which the escapement-wheel 0 can be seen. The dial 0 forms acover for the hole I) and prevents dust from getting into the works of the watch.-
The front plate A is provided with a curved recess F on one side of the hole I), and this recess is arranged concentric with the hands arbor and the rib 01., so that it may be formed expeditiously and inexpensively and with its bottom truly parallel with the front surface of the said rib.
G is a bridge-plate which is partially sunk over the hole I) at one end and is provided with a bearing 9 for the arbor of the escapement-lever c, the pallets of which engage with the teeth of the escapementheel. The plate G is retained in position by a single screw g, and a dowel-pin d may also be used, if desired.
The plate A is provided with the usual arbor or spindle-bearings and cup-shaped depressions e in its front surface around its bearings. The dial-plate rests upon the rib a and'upon the plate G, and is thereby supported clear of the ends of the arbors or spindles which project through the said bearings.
The escapement-lever 0 can be removed through the hole 12 without displacing the front frame-plate A by simply taking oi the dial and the bridge-plate G.
When the escapement-wheel c and escapement-lever c are replaced, the bridge-plate G is dropped back into its exact original position with great accuracy, because the bottom of the curved slot or recess is mathematically accurate with respect to the frameplate A, and one end of the bridge-plate abuts against the end of the curved slot.
What I claim is- The combination, with a plate A having a continuous peripheral rib a, said plate having also a hole I) over the escapement wheel and lever, and a curved recess on one side of the said hole arranged concentric with the said rib; of a flat bridge-plate G having one end abuttingagainst the end of the said recess and the other end projecting over the said hole I), the lower part of the said bridge-plate being let into the said recess and its upper surface being arranged in the same plane as the upper surface of the rib b; and a dialplate which rests on the said rib and the projecting surface of the bridge-plate and forms a dust-proof cover for the hole b, substantially as set forth.
