DUST-CAP FOR BALANCE-ESCAPEMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,369, dated January 13, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PAUL MOOSMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Gaps for Balance-Escapements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dust-caps for balance-escapements; and the object of the invention is to provide means for protecting the escapement against dust and for regulating the escapement without impairing the complete protection against dust during the regulating operation; and the invention consists in the combination, with a balance-escapement, of a dust-cap for the same, consisting of a cap having an opening, means closing said opening, and means connected with said closing means and en gaging the regulator-arm of the escapement; and the invention consists, further, in certain other combinations of parts, which will be fullydescribed hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of a clock provided with my improved dust-cap. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clock, drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the escapement shown in Fig. 2 with the dust-cap removed; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 44, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the movement of a clock, the balance-escapement of which is made of any approved construction and protected by my improved dustcap. D represents the dial, which is supported by posts of the frame of the clockmovement in the usual manner. The upper part of the dial is provided above the numeral XII with a graduated scale d, located below a recess of the dial. In the recess the uppermost end of an adjusting-lever L is visible and located so as to be readily adjusted according to the graduations. The upwardlyextending lever L is bent at a right angle to the lower part, and said lower part is shown in tegal with a plate Z, which serves as means for closing the arc-shaped slot 6 in the top of the dust-cap C. Said plate Z is pivoted to the dustcap, the pivot being preferably in line with the pivot of the regulator-arm e as shown, and said dust-cap is provided with a circumferential flange. by which it is attached to the bridge B. The escapement is supported on the bridge B and the latter by the plates A A of the clock-frame. The balance-wheel I) of the escapement is made of any suitable construction and turns by its arbor in the balance-bridge b and the escapement-bridge B. The cap 0 is recessed at that portion where it extends over the base of the balancebridge and is fitted tightly to the same and to the bridge B, so as to prevent ingress of dust. To the plate Z are applied at the under side two pins 6, which pass through the opening 6 to the inside of the cap and serve as means for engaging the regulator-arm e whereby by moving the plate Z by means of its operating-lever L the regulator-arm is shifted and the speed of the clock regulated, without, however, permitting any ingress of dust With in the cap at any time, said plate Z being of such shape and size as to always close said opening 6 in whatever position the pins may be in said opening. The plate Z fits tightly down upon the top of the cap and by its large contact-surface with the same elfectually prevents ingress of dust through the-opening e.
The dust-cap and the means described for closing the same and operating the regulatorarm of the escapement without permitting ingress of dust form a valuable protection to the escapement and render the same capable of being used for years without cleaning or repairing. The dust-cap is especially useful when applied over the escapements of chronometers, locomotive-clocks, and timepieces for sailing and steam vessels, as it protects the escapement from dust and retards evap-' oration of the oil, so that the timepiece is kept in running order for a much longer time than were the escapement exposed.
