(Application filed Oct. 5, 1901.)

Uivirnn *rnrn's .wnnr rrrcnx BUFFER OR GUARD FOR CARRlAGE PQLE TIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,856, dated December 1'7, 1901.
Application filed October 5, 1901- Serial No. 77,656. (No model.)
To all whom it may cmwern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the cityof Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buffers or Guards for Carriage-Pole Tips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a cushioned buffer or guard for carriage-pole tips, and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement thereof.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective buffer or guard for the tip of a carriage-pole which can be readily applied and removed from the tip of the pole and which is adapted to prevent disfiguring of any object or vehicle-body that it may come in contact with.
My invention consists of a bufier or guard for a carriage-pole tip, when constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a carriagepole tip and a central section of a buifer or guard embodying the features of my invention in application thereto, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the buffer or guard.
Referring to the drawings,'A is a carriagepole tip provided with crabs a and a.
B is the buffer or guard, of spherical or similar shape, made of rubber or other preferred yielding material, having a closed substantially spherical chamber 17, and the wall of the face of the bufier are wings or arms of a yielding material formed integral with or secured to the air-cushioned buffer or pneumatic ball B and provided at the respective free or outer ends with hooks b for engaging the members of the crabs a a of the pole A to hold securely and firmly in required position the ibufier fitted t0 the end portion of the tip, whereby in the event of any object or vehicle-body comi ng contact with the tip so provided with such a buffer the same may not be scratched or otherwise disfigured and the jar or shock in the contact against the pole lessened, thereby preventing in some instances splitting or frac turing of the pole.
Having thus described the nature and object of myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a carriage-pole tip provided with crabs with a pneumatic ball fitted to the end of said tip and projecting therefrom, and means for connecting said ball and crabs.
2. The combination of a carriage-pole tip provided with crabs extending therefrom with a pneumatic ball, the wall whereof is formed with an indentation or socket to receive the free end of said tip and projecting beyond said tip, and means for connecting said ball and crabs.
3. The combination of a carriage-pole tip and crabs secured thereto some distance from the free end of the tip, with a pneumatic ball formed to fit on the free end of said tip and to project therefrom and connecting means extending from the ball to the points of said crabs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD G. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
