UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEONARD HELD, OF BRIDGEPORT, CQNNECTICUT.
MATCH-SAFE ATTACHMENT FOR BICYCLES.
SEECIFCATION forning part of Letters Patent No. 688,517, dated. December 10, 1901.
Application filed November 24, 1899. Serial No. '738,168. (No model.)
Be it known that I, JOHN LEONARD HELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safe Attachments for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a match-safe attachnent for, bicycle handle-bars; and its object is to provide a convenient receptacle arranged within the grip of a bicycle handlebar for containing matches and means for securing the receptacle in position removably.
The constructionof the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification; and its novel features will be defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudiual section of a handle-bar grip and match-safe embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the match-safe detached.
The reference-nuneral ldesignates one end of a tubular handle-bar open at its outer end and exteriorly screw-threaded, as shown at 2. A sleeve 3 i's fitted over the handle bar and secured at its inner end by acollar i 4:, internally recessed to overlap the sleeve. Over the sleeve 3 is fit-ted the grip proper, comprising a hollow cylinder or sleeve 5, of cork or other suitable material.
6 designates a cap formed with an annular flange 6 internally threaded to fit over the threaded end of the handle-bar l and having projecting from the inner side thereof a tube '7, of thin metal. This tube may be formed integral with the cap, as shown, or made separate and secured thereto. I
The inneropen end of the tube 7 is closed by a cap 8, fitting over the tubeand secured thereto by any preferred means. The fastening means shown in the drawings consists 'of pins 9, projecting from diametrically opposite points on the inner surface of the tube and adapted to engage L-shaped slots 10 in the ends ot the tube, forming bayo'et-joints.
The tube 7 constitutes the match-recep tacle.
The utility and operation of the device will ?be apparent from the drawings and forego ing description. By unscrewingvthe cap 6 said cap and the tube 7 may be readily 'eing a tube fitting within the handle-bar, anda cap at the outer end of said tube formed integral therewith and having an annular intrnally-threaded flange engaging the threads of the handle-bar and having its edge abutting against the outer edge of said cylinder, said cap serving the double purpose of a bottom for the match-safe, and a securing means for the outer end of the sleeve and hollow cylinder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN LEONARD HELD. Witnesses:
