PROTECTOR FOR AXLE-SPINDLES.

Be itknown that 1, CHARLES H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Protectors for Axle Spindles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device for covering the axle-spindles of buggies and other vehicles to-thoroughly protect them while the vehicle is being painted and during transportation and storage.
The invention contemplates the provision of a pasteboard tube shaped to fit over the spindle and be held securely thereon, forming an inexpensive covering or protector which may remain upon the spindle until the wheels are put on in setting the vehicle up.
The following specification enters into a detail description of the construct-ion, application, and practical advantages of my invention, and what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is more specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the protector in section. Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the protector. Fig. 4 is a front end View.
Referring to said drawings, A designates the axle of a vehicle, and B the spindle, the latter being provided at its rear end with the usual collar 1). These parts are of the ordinary construction, and in carrying out my invention the spindle B and collar b are covered by a pasteboard tube 0, hereinafter particularly described.
The tube 0 consists of a cylindrical portion 0, adapted to fit upon the tapered spindle B, and at the rear end of said cylindrical portion 0 is a larger cylindrical portion 0, which is adapted to fit upon the collar 6, the portions 0 and c of the tube being connected by a ring 0 and the parts glued together. The parts of the tube are made up in the usual manner and when connected together form a single article that will closely fit the spindle and collar and be held securely thereon by frictional contact. The larger portion 0 of the tube is preferably a little thinner than the portion 0, so that it will yield and clamp over the collar, and said portion is provided with a bead c to insure a better engagement.
In use the tube is placed upon the spindle, and being forced rearward thereon will be held by frictional contact of the portion 0' and bead c with the collar 19; but I prefer to hold the tube in place by the nut D, screwed upon the end of the spindle, and when the nut is used the bead is dispensed with. The bearing parts of the spindle will be thoroughly protected by the tube not only from paint and varnish while the vehicle is being finished, but also protect said spindle from rust while the vehicle is being transported and in storage.
The device can be cheaply manufactured and therefore sold at very small cost, and, if
, desired, the tubes may be coated with a waterproof paint, so that it will not absorb Water, and thereby more thoroughly protect the spindle or bearing. I also purpose to make the portion 0 of the tube which fits over the body of the spindle tapered to correspond with the taper of said spindle; but by mark ing the tube straight it can be manufactured at less cost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a protector for axle spindles, consisting of the pasteboard tube 0 having the cylindrical portion 0 adapted to fit over the spindle, and a larger cylindrical portion a at one end thereof adapted to fit over the collar at the inner end of the spindle, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, aprotector for axle spindles, consisting of the pasteboard tube 0 having the cylindrical portion 0 and larger cylindrical portion 0 at one end thereof, said portion 0 being thinner than the portion 0 and provided with a head 0 substantially as shown and described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a pro= tector for axle-spindles, consisting of a pasteboard tube having the cylindrical portion 0, ring 0 and larger cylindrical portion a, the parts being glued together, substantially as described.
