UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT EMMET GAY, OF HARRISON, MICHIGAN.
SAND-BAND son VEHICLES.
Patented May 4, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. GAY, a citiuseful Improvements in Sand-Bands for Vehicles, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention is a sand-band for vehicles, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction and can be readily aptplied to any ordinary wheel, and which will e ectually exclude sand, dirt and water from the axle-spindle.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view showing the application of the invention, Fig. 2 is a crosssection on the line.22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the sand-band. removed.
Referring specifically to the drawing 5, denotes the hub of a wheel, and 6 is the axlespindle on which it is mounted. The spindle has the usual butting-ring 7.
The sand-band comprises a cap8 the inside diameter of which is the same as that of the hub so that it may be slipped thereon. The open end of the cap is slitted longitudinally as indicated at 9. The opposite closed end of the cap tapers as indicated at 10, and is dished as indicated at 11, witha central opening 12 in said dished portion of the same diameter as that of the butting-ring in order that the device may pass over the same when In use the open slitted endof the cap is slipped overthe inner end of the hub and it I l is made fast thereto by a clamping band 13.
The device is made of spring metal which together with the slits 9 permits it to be .clamped to the hub as stated. When the device is in position on the hub it projects outwardly therefrom and overhangs the axle on the inner side of the butting-ring as clearly shownin Fig. 1. The tapered portion 10 serves to shed sand and water and to carry it away from the spindle, and the dished portion 1 1 makes it impossible for the sand or water to get to the spindle, the opening 12 being of the same diameter as the butting-ring.
The device herein described is simple in construction and can be cheaply produced, it can be easily put on or taken off and it effectually excludes sand, dirt and water from the spindle.
I claim V A sand-band for vehicle Wheels comprisin a cap encircling the inner end of the hub an rojecting outwardly therefrom and overan 'ing the axle, said projecting end of the cap eing tapered and dished at its extremity, the dished portion having a shoulder at the inner end thereof projecting toward the axle and an opening to receive the axle and to pass over the butting-ring thereof.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT EMMET GAY.
