WILLIAM L. SLATE, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
WAGON-BED-LIFTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,207, dated December 3, 1901.
Application filed May 28,1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM L. SLATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort W'orth, Texas, have invented a new and Improved Wagon-Bed Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a simple device for taking wagon-beds from the wagons and supporting the beds in convenient positions for replacing the beds on the wagons when they are to be used again.
The object is to construct a simple bedlifter which can be easily operated and which will raise a wagon-bed up and hold it up until the bed is to be used again and by which the bed can be as readily replaced on the wagon.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description, and the invention will be pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application and specification.
The view shown is a perspective view showing the device placed under and attached to a wagon-bed ready for raising the bed.
In the drawing, A represents the wagon=-bed, and B represents the rear end thereof, only sufficient parts of the bed being shown to illustrate my invention. The entire bed is raised and lowered by one rope or cable 0. This rope is placed under the front end of the bed, as shown, and then the two ends are passed up and through pulleys a and b, and thence through the pulleys c and d, thence down through the shaft D. Hooks F, provided with suitable eyes, are engaged by the ropes. These hooks F engage the bed-sill E. The pulleys a, b, c, and d are supported in suitable hangers G, which are attached to the joists or beams H. The bed is raised by winding the rope C on the shaft D. The shaft D is provided with a crank K, by which the shaft is turned.
When the bed is to be raised, the shaft D is raised by hand to approximately the position of the dotted line M before the winding is to be commenced. During the winding the bed rises equally at all the corners. When the bed has been raised high enough,
filerial No. 62,285. (No model.)
the open ring P is placed in engagement with the part of the rope adjacent thereto. This ring will prevent the unwinding of the shaft or Windlass D. The shaft or Windlass D may be very small, as the rope is wound thereon from two directions. The crank K has a rectangular opening therein for the end of the shaft D and is pivotally mounted thereon, so that the crank can be inclined toward that part of the rope O which is adjacent to the crank when the bed has been raised high enough. The crank K and the handle R and the ring P may be all formed of one piece of metal or other material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A wagon-bed-lifting device comprising a suitable rope for engaging the bed or frame,
' suitable pulleys over which said rope runs,-
a shaft slidable on said rope whereby said shaft may be adjusted to'any position on said rope between the object to be raised and the place to which the object is to be raised before being turned for raising the object, and a crank for winding or turning said shaft provided with an open ring to engage said rope to prevent the unwinding of the same.
2. A wagon-bed-lifting device comprisinga rope having one part thereof looped under one end of the bed or frame and having hooks for engaging the other end of the bed or frame, suitable pulleys over which said rope runs, a shaft slidable on said rope between the object to be raised and said pulleys whereby said shaftmay be adjusted on said rope before the bed or frame is raised and whereby the bed or frame may be adjusted after being raised, said rope passing through said shaft, and a crank for turning said shaft provided with an open ring to engage said rope to pre-' vent the unwinding of the same.
In testimony whereof I set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of May, 1901.
WILLIAM L. SLATE.
