M. V. DAVIS.
DEVICE FOR RAISING AND LOWERING WEIGHTS. No. 378,293. Patented Feb. 21, 1888.

UNITED STATES MARTIN VANBUREN DAVIS,
PATENT @hrrcn OF HARRISON, ARKANSAS.
DEViGE. FOR RAISING AND LOWERlNG WEIGHTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,293, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed November 3, 1887. Serial No. 254,191. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN VANBUREN DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Boone and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Raising and Lowering \Veights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for raising and lowering weights; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularlypointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hoisting device embodying my improvements, showing the same in operation. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
A represents a vertical rectangular supporting-frame,which is mounted on a baseframe, B, and is provided at its upper side with a cross-bar, O.
I) represents ayoke, which is arranged transversely on the cross-bar, and from the ends of the said yoke depend ropes E. The lower ends of these ropes are attached to a winch, F, near the ends thereof, and are adapted to he coiled or uncoiled on the said winch when the latter is rotated. The winch is provided with a suitable crank, G.
H represents a pair of hangers, which are provided with depending diverging arms I, having eyes K at their lower ends. Each of these hangers is provided at its upper end with an integral collar, L, by means of which they are swiveled to the winch near the ends thereof, as shown.
M represents a pair of slings, each one of which comprises a crossbar, N, having cords or ropes O at its ends adapted to be connected to the eyes of the hanger-arms.
B represents a hook, which is adapted to engage the crank, and is connected to one of the ropes O.
The operation of my invention is as follows: In order to raise the weight or heavy object, such as shown at a, the cross-bars of the slings are first placed under the same and connected to the hanger-arms, and the operator then grasps the crank and turns it in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, thereby causing the ropes E to be coiled or wound on the winch, and consequently causing the latter to rise with the weight. hen the weight has been elevated to the required height, it may be suspended by engaging the hook I? with the crank, which will effectually prevent the winch from rotating in a retrograde direction and lowering the weight.
A hoisting apparatus thus constructedvwill be found particularly useful in taking the beds from wagons and in lowering the same thereon; but it may be used for elevating heavy objects of various kinds, as I do not limit myself in this particular.
When the device is to be used for raising bales of cotton and hay and similar objects, a platform will be secured on the cross-bars of the slings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of the depending ropes E, the winch secured to thelower ends of said ropes and provided with an o1)erating-crank,the hangers swiveled t0 the winch, and the slings attached to the hangers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a hoisting apparatus, of the depending ropes E, the winch secured to the lower ends of the said ropes, adapted to coil and uncoil the same and provided with the crank, the hangers swiveled to the winch and having the diverging arms, the slings M, attached to the lower ends of the said hanger-arms and adapted to support the object to be hoisted, and the hook adapted to engage the crank-arm and thereby prevent the winch from rotating, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN VANBUREN DAVIS.
Witness es:
R. F. KING, J r., JAMES T. Horrne.
