IMPROVED WASHING MAGHINB.
@tige tlgetnle refeetet tu iii tlgese `tettets nteut mit meeting peut of tige 'smite'.
To ALL WHOM 1T MAY Geneanet;
Be it known that I, Moens D. WEBBER, of Woodbury, in the county oflWashington, and State of Vermont, have inventati a new and useful improvement in Washing Machine;V and I do hereby declare that the .following is a full, clear, and exact dcscriptionthereof, which will enableothers skilled `in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved machine. Figure 2is a. vertical cross-section of the saine, taken through the lne'x z',- iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. y i My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing machine, so constructed andarranged as to be easily operated, and to wash the clothes quickly, Vevenly, and without injury to the fabric; and it consists in the combination of the lever, connecting-bars, and pivotcd beaters with each other and with the box or tub;
and in making the tub with a curved bottom and with a nearly vertical front side boa-1'd;the whole being c011-r structed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the box or tub, which is supported upon the legs B, which are of such a length as to raise the tub to a convenient height. The ends al of the box A are vertical, and the bottom z2 curves gradually from thc `lowest point up to near the top of the rear side, as shown in fig. 2. Thcfront side a of the box is nearly vertical, as shown in iig. 2, for convenience in putting in and taking out the clothes and for attaching the wringen The lower part of the front side a3 is groovedlongitudinally to form a beater-board for 4the` clothes lto be p beaten` against. To the central part of the rear side of the tub is attached a bar, C, projecting a little above theA upper edge ot said tub. To the projecting end of the bar C is pivoted the lever D, as shown in ig. 1. To the lever D, a. little within the ends of the tub A, are pivoted the upper ends of the connecting-barsE, the lower ends of which are pivotcd to the rear sides ofthe heaters F'. The beaters F are pivoted to the rshaft CT', passing through the ends of the tubA by means of the arms H, strengthened by the braces I, as lshown in fig. 2.
In using the machine, clothes are put into the front part of the tub, between the front side a3 f the box and the front sides of the beaters F, which said front sides are corrugated or 4grooved longitudinally, as, shown in iig; 2. The lever D is then worked, Vwhich forces the beaters F forward alternately, squeezing the clothes between thelu and the corrugated part of the front side board a. This operation squeezes out the water and dirt, and' l at the same time forces the clothes upward, so that upon the withdrawal of the beater for another stroke the clothes will fall back, turning partially over, so that a different part of the clothes may be acted upon; at each stroke, thereby insuring the clothes being washed thoroughly and evenly. i i i l What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-e- ,e The combination of the lever D, connecting-bars E, and pivoted beaters F, with eaeh'ntlier and with the box or tub A, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purposes set forth,
I MOSES D. WEBBEB. Witnesses: ALoNzo PEARCE,
LonENzoeJ. Pennen.
