Description

Letters Patent No. 68,796, dated September 10, 1867.

ro ALL wHoM 1T MAY coNoEnN:
Be it known that I, C. SCIIWANER, of Keokuk, in thecounty of Lee, Stute of Iowa, have invented a new Trace-Buckle; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear. and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specifica tion, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view oithe improved buckle applied to a trace and llame-strap.
Figure 2 is a view ol" the buckle detached from the straps.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the improved buckle and straps.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved buckle, which is designed particularly for the use of traces. It consists in the combination ot' a stationary tongue or hinged clamp' so constructed as to afford a firmer hold and safer attachment than buckles which have hinged or pivoted tongues, as will be hereinafter described. I To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a rectangular clumpingframe, which is secured to the hametug B; and C represents that portion ofthe buckle-frame which has the tongue formed on it,l'and through which the trace-strap D is passed. This frame C has a tongue or stud, e, formed upon its outer surface, near its pivoted end, and in the middle of its width, which tongue is slightly'taperng, and of such length as to pass through the holes which are made through the trace, as shown in fig. 3. The free end of the frame C is curved outward sufficiently to allow the trace to lie atly against the transverse portions ff when passed through this frame, as
shown in fig. 3. TheV frame A, to which frame C is pivoted, is constructed of .the curved form shown in igs. I, 2, and 3, with a flattened transverse clamping-ba.r, g, which extends across the frame C, so as to press upon the trace D in rear of' and near the tongue e. This frame A is pivoted to frame C, and constructed in such manner that when the trace is under tension the bar q will be iorcibly pressed against the trace, and thus serve, in conL junction with the tongue e on frame C, to firmly confine the trace. The clamping action of the bar q of frame A not only prevents the trace from slipping oii` the tongue e, but also gripes the trace in rear of this tongue, so that enlargement or tea-ring out of the trace at the holes is prevented. i
It will be seen from the above description that I'have a trace-buckle, which consists of but two parts, pivoted together and so formed as to afford a combined tongue and clamp-fastening for straps. The buckle is also so constructed as to admit of a ready attachment and detachment of the trace when it is not under tension.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manner substantially as herein described and shown of constructing and arranging the two curvedhinged frames constituting the buckle, in combination with clamp g and holding-tongue e.
C. SCHWANER.
