MAILING-TUBE.

SPECIIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,613, dated November 26, 1901. Application filed August 20, 1900. Serial No. 27,492. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN W. DAVIS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Mailing- Tube, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in mailing-tubesg'and its primary object is to provide a device of simple, inexpensive, and durable construction within which articles may be securely held in transit.

Myimprovement consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is perspective View of my improved mailing-tube closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough on line with the separated edges. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tube open. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section therethrough on line with the separated edges, showing the outer end of the tape twisted and passing through the slot leading to the aperture.

1 is a tube formed of a single sheet of material, the adjacent edges 2 of which are sep arated. These edges are sealed and held together by means of a tape 3, which is fastened by adhesive materialor otherwise secured to the tube, at one end thereof, extending across the adjacent end 4 along the separated edges, where it is fastened by adhesive material to close the meeting edges, and terminates in a tongue 6, which extends from the separated edges, is provided with a button 7, and provides a detachable end which is adapted to extend across the other end 5 of the tube and to be fastened in the vicinity thereof.

8 is an aperture, preferably of triangular shape, formed in the side of the tube at the tongue end and having its base transverse of the tube, so as so provide a flat seat for the extremity of the tongue, which is tightly drawn across the end of the tube and is held by the button 7. Over the aperture-9 is a slot in the end of the tube leading into the aperture. When it is desired to close the tube, the tongue is twisted by the button and slightly stretched or pulled endwise and its extremity inserted edgewise through the slot into the aperture and the button released, which will be seated on the outside of the aperture.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A mailing-tube having separated edges and a tape whereby the separated edges are sealed extending from one end of the tube at one side entirely across the adjacent end, to the other side, alongside the outside of the separated edges and beyond the separated edges to provide a tongue adapted to extend entirely across the other end and engage the first-named side.

2. A mailing-tube having separated edges and an end formed with an aperture and a slot leading to the aperture at one end, and a tape whereby the separated edges are sealed, extending from the other end of the tube, across the adjacent end, along the outside of the separated edges, and beyond the separated edges to provide a tongue adapted to extend across the slotted and apertured end, and a button secured to the tongue for engaging the side of the tube.
