OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON OR STUD.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 687,447, dated November 26, 190i.
Application filed April 14, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. WILLIA S, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Alhambra, Los Angeles county, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons orStuds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to buttons and studs; and it consists specifically in a peculiar form of head, which in the present embodiment is specially designed for use in connection with collar-buttons.
The novelty of the invention lies in a head for a button, stud, or the like which is normally centered with relation to the shank and parallel with the base, said head being adjustably mounted, however, so that when given a half-turn it becomes inclined to and forms an angular continuation of the'shank, which thereby serves to facilitate its insertion through the buttonholes of the shirt-band and collar.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, throughout the several views of which like numerals of reference indicate like parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a collar-button constructed in accordance with my invention, the inclosing envelop, casing, or cap of the head shown in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the head adjusted for insertion through the buttonholes. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the button as it appears in Fig. 1, but with the cap removed; and Fig. at is a similar view with the head removed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the base of the button, which may be of any desired form, construction, or material. Projecting centrally upward from the base is the shank 2, which may be solid, hollow, or of any desired cross-section and connected with the base in any suitable or well-known manner. The upper end of the shank 3 is bent to form an obtuse angle with the main portion and is grooved at L for a purpose to be described.
5 represents the head, a portion 6 of the under surface of which is parallel with the base, while the remaining portion 7 thereof is inclined to seat upon an angular ofiset of Serial No. 12,955. (No model.)
the shank, to which it is pivotally secured by the pin 8. Aspring-tongne 9, projecting from the under surface 6 of the head, cooperates with the groove 4 in the angular oifset of the shank and serves to retain the head in its normal and adjusted positions, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
The method of operation of my invention is as follows: To insert the button, the head is given a half-turn-t-hat is to say, it is adjusted from the position shown in Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 2-and thus arranged the head forms practically a continuation of the shank and may be readily inserted through the buttonholes with little or no resistance and without any tendency to tear or break the material of the shirt-band or collar. When properly inserted, the head is given a reverse turn, which serves to-shift it from an inclined to a horizontal p0sitioni. e., parallel with the base-and it is yieldingly locked by the spring-tongue in engagement with the groove of the shank-offset. This tongue becomes disengaged as the head is turned or adjusted and automatically reengages without requiring to be lifted or otherwise assisted in its action.
The advantages of my invention lie in its extreme simplicity, effectiveness, and the facility and convenience with which it may be inserted or adjusted to release the collar, with little or no skill or force being required in the operation.
It will be evident, of course, that various changes can be made in the construction illustrated without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. For example, difierout forms of heads may be employed with the shank, the pivot-pin may be formed in part with either the head or shank, or the 'pivot connection may be effected without the use of a pin or stud by means of an inclosing casing for the head; but all such changes I consider obvious modifications of the construction shown, and therefore within the meaning of the present invention.
Having therefore described my invention, I claim-- 1. Abutton 0r stud having an eccentricallymountedhead rotatable about an axis inclined to its shank.
mally parallel with its base, said head being eecentrically mounted and rotatable about an axis inclined to its shank.
5. A button or stud having a shank provided With an inclined offset, a head rotatably mounted upon the offset and lying normally parallel with the base.
6. A button or stud having a shank terminating in an inclined offset, and a pivoted head having a beveled portion adapted to cooperate With the inclined oifset, said head lying normally parallel with the base.
'7. A button or stud having a shank terminating in an inclined seat, a head having a portion of its under surface beveled and pivoted to said seat, said head lying normally parallel with the base and forming an upwardinolined continuation of the shank when adjusted, and means for yieldingly retaining the head in its normal and adjusted position.
8. A button or stud having a shank terminating in an inclined offset, a head mounted upon the offset and rotatable about an axis at right angles thereto.
9. A button or stud having a shank ter1ni nating in an inclined grooved ofiset, a head mounted upon the offset and rotatable about an axis at right angles thereto, and a springtongue carried by the head and adapted to cooperate With the groove of the ofiset in yieldingly retaining the head in its normal or adjusted position.
Signed at Alhambra, California, this 2d day of April, 1900.
FRANK E. YVILLIAMS.
