' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD A. WEBSTER, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HERBERT B. NEWTON, OF I-IAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROTARY EDGE-SETTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 687,417, dated. November 26, 1901.
Application filed December 1'7, 1900. Serial No. 40,121. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HAROLD A. WEBSTER, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Ed ge-Setters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines or devices for setting and burnishing the sole edges of boots and shoes and it consists in the novel features of construction and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in the following specification, clearly illustrated upon the accompanying sheet of drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which like characters indicate like parts wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a rotary edge-setter constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section through the operatingrolls on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 represents a vertical sectional View on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
In my copending application, Serial No. 1,231, I have shown, described, and claimed, broadly, my new rotary edge-setter and have also claimed one form thereof.
This application coversthat particular species of my new rotary edge-setter wherein'the rolls or pins have a movement of translation around a common axis, but do not rotate on their own axes.
1 represents a portion of a standard or bracket of an edge-setter. I
2 represents a shaft carried by a bearing 3 on the end of the bracket 1.
1 represents a pulley fast upon one side of said-shaft and arranged to be rotated by a belt 5.
the pintles 12 and the rolls 13 being fast to the holder 11 and adapted to be driven thereby in a circular path, although the rolls 13 have no motion of rotation.
14 represents a flange resting upon the ends of the rolls 13.
15 represents a screw by which the holder, rolls, and flange that comprise the setter are securely fastened to the reduced end 10 in order that the setter may be driven in unison with the shaft.
It will be observed that the rolls 13 are separated or spaced from each other and from the holder, so that air can be-circulated in and about the rolls, thus enabling them to be driven at great speed without burning. These rolls as-they wear may be adjusted to bring a new face into operative position. This may be done by turning them forcibly on their pintles when they are driven on a circular pintle or by removing them from the pintles, depending upon the manner in which the roll is secured to the pintle and depending somewhat upon the manner in which the pintle is secured to the holder. It will also be observed that therolls 13 rest upon a reduced shoulder 16 of the holder.
17 represents the outer end of the holder formed as a collar against which the flange 14: bears, said collar 17, as shown, being separated from the rolls 13. The outer end of the holder or collar 17 has no particular function, so far as the rolls 13 are concerned, other than that it is necessary to have said collar separated from the rolls by an air-space, the purpose of the collar 17 being as an abutment against which the flange let strikes.
While I prefer to have the rolls of a circular form for cheapness of construction, yet my invention is not limited to such shape, as I may use a roll having a dilferent form in cross-section than a circle without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, which includes, in the present case, a rotary edge-setter comprising a holder equipped with a fixed set of setting-rolls spaced from each other.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it maybe made or all of the modes of its use, I In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig I declare that what I claim, and desire. to senature in presence of two witnesses. cure by Letters Patent, is
