WILLIAM J. MORAND, OF PASSAIO, NEYV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO I. S. VAN DEUSEN & SON, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR ROLLING BUTTONS ON WHIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,503, dated January 30, 1883.
Application filed November 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MORAND, of lnssaic, ill the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Rolling Buttons on hips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 w of Fig.
[5 1, and illustrating its use. Fig. 3 represents a part of a whip provided with two styles of buttons.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the rolling and finishing of the buttons on whips.
Theinvention consists in a machine for rolling buttons on whips, constructed with two parallel rollers provided with a driving mechanism, and a short roller pivoted to a swinging lever, whereby the said buttons can be readily rolled and finished while the whips and buttons are revolved by the said rollers, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A is the frame ofthe machine, which is de- 0 signed to be secured to a suitable bench or frame, and to which are journaled two par.- allel rollers, B O. The rollers B C are placed at the same level, and to their, ends are attached, or upon them are formed, two rqualsized gear-wheels, D E, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of a gear-wheel, F, placed beneath them and journaled to the frame A.
The journal of the gear-wheel F projects at the outer side of the frame A, and is pro- 0 vided with a fast pulley, G, and a loose pulley, H, to receive the driving-belt, which belt is not shown in the drawings. The outer end of the journal of the gear-wheel F revolves in a bearing in a bracket, I, attached to the frame A. With this construction both the rollers B G will be revolved in the same direction.
Upon the rollers B (J, and opposite each other, are formed grooves J K to give the desired ornamental form to the buttons on the M, to the side of which is pivoted a short roller, N, the face of which is grooved to correspond with the grooves J K of the rollers B O. The roller N is pivoted to the lever M in such a manner that when the said lever M is swung down the said rollerN will be directly above the grooves J K.
Several sets of grooves of different forms can be made in the rollers B G, and several corresponding short rollers can be provided, so that a roller can be pivoted to the lever M to correspond with any set of grooves in the rollers B G, the lever M being adjusted upon the shaft L in position to bring its roller over the set of grooves to be used.
A part of the rollers B O is left smooth for finishing smooth buttons, and a smooth roller, 0, is pivoted to a lever, P, the end of which works loosely upon the shaft L, so that the said lever can be turned upon the shaft L to tilt the said roller sufficiently to roll the ends of the button upon an inclination or bevel.
The roller 0 can be pivoted to the side of the lever P, or the said lever can be widened and slotted to receive the said roller, as shown in Fig. 1.
In using the machine the whip is placed in the space between the rollers B G, with the button to be rolled over the grooves J K, or
over the smooth parts of the said rollers, and the proper lever is swung down to bringits roller over the said button, and as the whip and button are revolved by the revolution of the rollers B G the desired form will be given 0 to the said button, the requisite pressure being applied by the operator with his hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A machine for rolling buttons on whips, provided with the rollers B G, having a plain or smoothsurface and corresponding grooved surfaces, and with pivoted rollers N and O, scribed, ivhereby smooth buttons can be readwith their swinging levers M I substantially ily rolled and finished, as set forth.
