NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. TEWKSBURY, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS,
MACHINE FOR ORNAMENTING LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,269, dated August 7,1888.
Application filed December 27. 1887. Serial No. 259,023.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. TEWKS- BURY, of Haverhill, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Ornamenting Leather and other Material, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a machine for ornamenting the edge of leather and other material, as by scallops, perforations, and the like.
The invention consists in the combination, with a revolving metallic bed-roll over which the leather or other material is fed, of an oppositelyrevolving ornamenting or pattern roll adapted to act upon the material on the bed-roll to give to the material the desired ornamentation. The rolls are positively rotated in opposite directions by intermeshing toothed wheels or other means, and one of the rolls is made adjustable with relation to the other. Both the ornamentingroll and bedroll are readily detachable, so that different rolls may be employed for the different patterns desired, yet operated by the same mechanism.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation and partial section a machine for ornamenting the edge of leather or other material embodying this invention; Fig. 2, an end view of the machine shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, an end view OfHtlJG machine, showing a modified form of r0 s.
The main frame-work A is of suitable shape to sustain the operating parts, it being formed integral with or attached to a post or standard, A. The bed-roll a is fixed to the end of a shaft, a, by a nut, a which enters the recessed side or face of the roll, said shaft having its bearings in the framework A. The opposite end of the shaft a has fixed to it a toothed wheel, a, which engages a toothed wheel, a, fixed to one end of a shaft, b, which shaft 2) has its bearings in the main frame'A and in an adjustable block, a, which enters a socket in the main frame, said block being adjustable vertically by an adjusti-ngscrew, c. The shafts a b hence lie substantially parallel.
The ornamenting or pattern roll 02 is socured to the outer end of the shaft b by a nut, d, coincident with the roll a, said roll d in Figs. 1 and 2 having its periphery shaped to No model.)
act upon the material uponthe bed-roll a and leave a scalloped edge. A handcrank or drive-pulley is fixed to the shaft a to revolve the latter, and while revolving it will be seen that the rolls d a revolve in opposite directions, as indicated by arrows, Fig. 2.
The leather or other material to be scalloped is fed over the bed-roll a beneath the roll d. The bed-roll is provided with a series of perforations or sockets, 2, (see dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 3,) and an ornamenting-roll, d, is placed upon the shaft b, the roll d being removed, the said roll d consisting of a disk or hub having a series of studs or projections, 3,which are arranged to enter the perforations of the bed-roll as the two rolls revolve, and the leather or other material fed over the roll a will be perforated. Thus it will be seen that the bed-roll a may be used with either the roll d or roll d or both, as desired. It will also be understood that rolls capable of producing various patterns may be substituted for the rolls d or (1 and a suitable bedroll, a, employed corresponding with the pattern-roll.
A curved gage, e, embracing a portion of the periphery of the roll a, is secured to the frame-work for regulating the distance from the edge of the material the roll d shall act.
By the machine herein shown both the pattern-roll and bed-roll have a positive move ment and conjointly aid to feed the material.
I claim- In a machine for ornamenting the edges of leather and other material, the revolving recessed metallic bed-roll a, over which the material passes, the said roll having its rear por= tion scalloped and its front portion perforated, combined with an oppositely revolving ornamenting or pattern roll co operating therewith, the curved gage e,embracing a portion of the roll a, the shafts a b for the said rolls, the adjustable bearing-block. c for one end of the shaft 1), and gearing connected to the rear ends of the shafts to revolve them in opposite directions, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW J. TEVVKSBURY.
