Application filed December 10,1904 Serial No. 236,293.
1.) all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. DIoKsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Confectioners Sizing and Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of machines employed in rolling, sizing, and cutting candy and like plastic substances, and has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient structural formation and combination of parts adapted to permitof a ready and rapid change from a position adapted for the operation of sizing the material to a position adapted for the operation of cutting the material, and vice versa, as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail Vertical elevation at line a; as, Fig. 3, of a sizing and cutting machine embodying the present improvement with the parts in position for effecting the cutting operation. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts in position for effecting the sizing operation. Fig. 3 is a detail front elevation of the machine with the parts in the position described in connection with Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating the locking mechanism by which the series of sizing and cut ting rolls of the present mechanism are secured at their different adjustments. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section illustrating a modified arrangement of the series of sizing and 1 cutting rolls.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a horizontal bed or table supported by the usual vertical side frames 2 and provided with vertical lonlocking disk aforesaid.
guided vertically in vertical extensions 5 of the side frames aforesaid.
6 represents counterpart vertical screws journaled in the extensions 5 and having engagement with the slides 4 and adapted to impart vertical adjustment to the same.
7 is a transversely-extending shaft provided at one end with an operating handle or wheel Sand having bevel-gear connections 9 with the vertical adjusting-screws 6 to impart simultaneous movement to the same.
10 represents a pair of end heads or blocks carried by a transverse shaft 11, which in turn is journaled in the adjustable slides 4, the arrangement admitting a turning movement of the end heads or blocks 10 upon the bearings of said shaft in the slides 4 aforesaid.
12 is a hand crank carried by the shaft 11 for the convenient turning adjustment of the same by hand.
I 13 is a locking-disk carried by the shaft 11 and improved with a series of peripheral notches for engagement with the locking-bolt by which the said shaft is locked at any desired point in its turning adj ustmentfi'.
14 is the latch-bolt above referred to moving in guides on the main frame and engaged by a spring 15, the tendency of which is to force the point of the bolt into engagement with an adjacent peripheral notch of the 16 is a hand-lever engaging said latch-bolt to afford means for withdrawing the bolt from its engagement with the locking-disk when it is desired to effect a turning adjustment of the end heads 10 aforesaid.
17 and 18 are two or more rolls j ournaled in'the turning heads or blocks 10 transversely of the machine, and such rolls are preferably of a uniform diameter with their axis of rotation concentric with the axis of the shaft 11.
In the simpler and usual form of the present invention, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the construction will comprise a pair of such rolls, one roll, 17, having a plain cylindrical periphery to constitute the sizing-roll of the machine for reducing the material to the required size or thickness, and the other roll, 18, consisting of a series of circular knives secured in separated relation upon a carrying-shaft to constitute the cutting-roll of the machine for cutting the material into sections as such material is fed longitudinally along the machine-bed by the feed-roll 3, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The machine as so arranged is adapted to cut the material into squares by giving such material a quarter turn upon the machine-bed and a second passage beneath the aforesaid cutting-roll. By the substitution of one or more cutting-rolls having circular cutting-knives the spaced relation of which differ the material can be cut into corresponding-sized pieces to suit the varied requirements of a particular trade. The scope of the present invention, however, embraces the arrangement of a number of said cutting rolls with differently spaced blades in the heads 10 with a View to the greatest degree of convenience where the machine is re uired to be frequently changed for the pro uction of pieces of different sizes and so that one cuttingroll may be employed to cut the material in one direction and another cutting-roll having differently spaced cutting-blades employed to cut the material in the other direction and produce pieces of the material having an oblong form. In Fig. 5 such arrangement is shown, and comprises one sizing or flattening roll 17 and a series of three cutting-rolls 18,journaled symmetrically in the heads 10.
19 represents clearing-bars arranged between the series of circular blades of the cutting-roll 18 to prevent the adherence of the material between the blades.
20 represents transverse supporting-rods attached to the heads 10 and having connection with the ends of the clearing-bars 19 by elongated slots 21 in said bars, so that the same are permitted a limited independent vertical movement with relation to said bars and the circular cutting-blades, as usual in the present class of machines.
22 is a central gear-wheel the axis of which is the same as the axis of the journal-shaft 1 1 of the turning-heads 10.
23 represents gear-wheels on the shafts of the respective sizing and cutting rolls 17 and 18, gearing with the central gear-wheel 22 and receiving motion therefrom.
24 is a train of ear-wheels having driving connection with the carrying shaft or sleeve of the central gear-wheel 22 and with the shaft of the feed-roll 3, so as to impart uniform and simultaneous rotation to the different rolls of the machine.
Suitable means may be provided for the ready reversal of the direction of rotation of the mechanism; but such provision forms no part of the present invention, and in consequence is not shown or described in detail.
In the operation of the present machine the heads 10 are turned in the vertically-adjustable slides 4 to bring the sizing-roll 17 in adjacent verticalrelation to the feed-roll 3, after which the slides 4 are adjusted vertically by means heretofore described to bring the sizing roll 17 the proper distance from the feed-roll 3. The material, supported on a suitable base plate or board, if necessary, is then entered between said rolls and in its passage between the same is reduced to the required size or thickness. The heads 10 are then turned to bring the cutting-roll 18 into adjacent relation to the feed-roll 3, at the same time moving the sizing-roll 17 into an inactive position, after which the material is entered between said rolls and in its passage is divided into a series of longitudinal strips. The material is then given a quarter-turn upon the machine-bed 1 and again entered between said rolls and in its passage is divided into a series of small pieces or squares of the required size.
'Having thus fully described my said inven tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
