PATENT QFFICE.
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO MICHAEL N. BUSHEY, OF NEWTON, IOWA.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No.176,427, dated April 25, 1876; application filed January 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD OROGKER, of city of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Leather-Splitting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,.and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my leather-splitting machine, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention has relation to machines which are designed for skiving and splitting leather as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A A designate two upright standards, on top of which is rigidly but adjust-ably secured a knife, B. O designates a drum or roller, the reduced ends or journals of which are in vertical slots made in the standards A A, and are sustained upon cams on a, secured to a horizontal shaft, D. Shaft D is journaled in said standards, and has a hand-lever secured to or formed on one of its ends. By vibrating the hand-lever the drum 0 can be adjusted and set at any de sired distance from'the knife B.
G G designate two setscrews, one of which is designed to bear on the longest journal of the drum 0, and the other on a cap or follower, b, which covers one end of the cam-shaft D, as shown in Fig. 3. After the drum G-is adjusted to the position desired, it is rigidly held in such position by turning down the screws G G. By loosening the screws and raising the drum 0, while drawing a strap through the machine, such strap can be tapered any desired length.
J designates a horizontal bar, which is arranged over the drum 0 and formed on crankarms j, which are free to be vibrated. The object of this bar J is to hold the straps down in place in front of the knife B and prevent them from being cut unevenly while being drawn beneath the knife. There is sufficient elasticity in the bar J to admit of any thickness of leather.
A stoppin, g, on the inside of one of the standards A will prevent the drum from being moved beyond the required distance.
1 am well aware that an adjustable drum and a swinging or adjustable pressure-roller are not new; hence I make no claim to such devices, broadly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a leather-skiving machine, the inwardlybent bow-guide J, having the lever-handle l, and adapted to be raised from the work by its crank-arms j, all constructed and operating substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
