Description
UNTED STATES'PATENT Ormea,`
GEORGE SAVARY, OF GROVELAND, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPRovi-:D PEASHLLER- Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 58,305, dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE T. SAVARY, of Groveland, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Family Pea-Sheller; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming apart of this specification, which is a front elevation ot' the machine.
The object of my invention is to so arrange and combine the parts ot' a peashelling machine that the gearing, cogs, and other expensive apparatus employed in ordinary peashellers may be dispensed with Without detracting from the eflciency ofthe machine, the machine thus produced being entirely simple and not liable to get out of repair; and my invention consist-s, substantially, in combining the upper and lower rollers of a pea-shelling machine,l by means of a ring of elastic or other suitable material secured to one of the rolls, in such manner that it shall cause the roll not immediately driven by the motor power to revolve by friction of contact, and shall at the same time keep a space between the two rolls, through which the pease can pass without being crushed or damaged.
To enable others to understand and use my invention, I will now describe the manner in which it may be carried into effect hy reference to the accompanying drawing.
The pea-Sheller there shown is constructed of two standards, A A', connected by a topY bar, B, and supporting driving-roller O anddriven roller D.V Rollers C and D are slightly separated, as drawn, and upon a' neck turned upon roller O is shrunk an elastic ring of rubber, E, which presses against roller D and communicates to it motion.
The pease to'be shelled are introduced hetween the rollers bypassing the end ofthe pea-cod through the interspace and rotating roller C hy means of a crank on its journal. The elastic ring E, closely clasping the roller O, communicates motion to rollerD byits friction, and the pea-cod is fed forward between the rollers, while the pease are snapped out ot' the pod in the other direction and caught in a suitable vessel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Combining aroller of a machine, as described, bythe employment of a ring of vulcanized rubber, or other elastic or suitable material, under such an arrangement that while motion is communicated from one roll to the other by` friction of contact there shall also be a suftiset forth.
GEO. T. SAVARY.
