HENRY H. NORRINGTON, OF WEST BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
BOX AND REVERSHBLE COVER.
SPECIFICATION formin Dart of Letters Patent No. 687,256, dated November 26, 1901.
g Y Application tiled December 28, 1900l Serial No: 41,316. (Novinodel.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. NoRRiNGToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Bay City, countyof Bay, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Box and Reversible Cover, and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. y
My invention has for its object certain new and useful improvements in a box and reversible cover adapted for various purposesfor example, for containing cigarettes, cigars, blocks of paints with their brushes, and for otherarticles of merchandise-the same being also applicable for the construction of inkingpads.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to any particular use alone to which my improved device shall be employed.
My invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
Figure l is a view in perspective with the cover shown in open position., Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan View. Fig. 4i is a cross-section.
The object of my invention is to provide a box for an inking-pad or for other purposes wherein the cover is reversible, so that the under side ofthe cover may be provided with an inking-pad or may be employed for other purposes, as may be desired.
The object is also to provide a box havin such a cover wherein the box may be utilized for advertising purposes or to hold various commodities.. Furthermore, the inside of the cover if not utilized for an inkingpad may be utilized for holding various articles of merchandise.
I carry out my invention as follows:
In the drawings the body of a box is indicated at a, said box being constructed to form a receptacle b, the box to this end being formed with lateral and end Walls 1 2 3 e, upon the upper edge of which the cover may Where the cover is provided with an inking-pad the same vmay be indicated at g, the inking-pad normally constituting the under side of the cover and having marginal seating-anges outside the pad; but the inkingpad may be dispensed with, the inner face of the cover being constructed to receive any article of merchandise, if desired ,said articles of merchandise being secured thereto in any suitable manner. The reversible cover is mounted upon the body of the box by means of arms 5 6, pivotally secured tothe longitudinal center of the cover-as, for example, underneath the metal portion f-the opposite extremities of said arms being pivotally engaged with the extremities of thebox, at one side thereof, in any suitable manner, as by ears h h, secured to the extremities of the box. The arms may be formed of a single piece of wire extending longitudinally of the cover, the extremities of the Wire being turned to form said arms, the arms lying in between the ends of the cover and the upwardly-projecting fianges of the end pieces When the cover is closed. It will readily be observed that when so constructed the cover may be lifted and swung over into reversed position,
bringing the Linder surface uppermost, and
may readily be restored to normal position, the under surface of the cover being inclosed within the receptacle of the box. I prefer that the outer extremities of the arm shall be pivotally engaged with the upwardly-projecting flanges of the end pieces at one extremity of said flanges. It will be obvious since the sides of the box are left free or open between said upwardly-projecting iianges that there is no impediment to the raising of the cover and the reversal of its surfaces, if desired. If it is desired to utilize the under surface of the cover for an inlzing-pad, the
IOO
cover may be lifted and its surfaces reversed, the cover being then restored to position upon the upper edges of the sides l 2 3 4 of the box, said sides supporting.,r the cover with its pad turned uppermost. lVhen it is desired to close the device, the cover is again lifted, its surfaces again reversed, and the cover restored to closed position with the pad turned inward.
What I claim as my invention isl. ln an inking device a receptacle formed with end and side Walls, the end walls being formed with vertical flanges and a horizontal fiat portion, extensions on the rear ends of the fianges, arms journaled in said extensions, a reversible closure secured to the arms, an inking-pad on one side of the closure, of less area than the closure, whereby a margin of the closure is exposed to rest upon the horizontal portions of the ends and sides of the receptacle when the inking-pad is lowered into the receptacle.
2. The combination 'with a box constructed with side and end walls of a reversible cover having pivotal connections with the end walls, said end walls provided with vertical flanges and an inner horizontal flat portion, said cover adapted when closed to rest upon the flat horizontal portions and between the vertical flanges and prevent the cover contacting with the bottom of the box.
3. The combination with a box constructed with side and end walls, the latter having vertical flanges and horizontal fiat portions, of a reversible cover pivotally connected by arms to the rear of the rear edge of the vertical fianges, said cover adapted when closed to rest upon the horizontal fiat portions and between the vertical flanges and house the arms between the ends of the cover and the vertical flanges, said box forming a receptacle beneath the cover.
4. The combination with a box constructed with side and end walls having vertical fianges at the extreme outer edges of the end walls and providing a fiat horizontal portion level with the upper edges of the side walls, of a reversible cover, arms pivotally connected with the cover at the longitudinal center thereof, and connected at their outer ends to the rear of the rear edge of the vertical fianges, said cover adapted to be seated upon the horizontal portion between the vertical flanges and house the arms between the ends of the cover and the Vertical flanges and expose either side of the cover.
5. The combination with a box constructed with side and end walls having vertical fianges at the outer edges of the end walls and horizontal fiat portions level with the upper edges of the side Walls, of a reversible cover provided with arms having a central pivotal engagement therewith, and with the ends of the said end flanges, said cover constructed to seat upon the upper edges of the side walls and horizontal portions of the end walls and be supported thereupon above the bottom of the box and between the vertical fianges with either face of the cover uppermost, said box forming a receptacle beneath the seated cover.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
