MUSIC-BENCH.
Speecation of Letters Patent.
Application led July 26, 1909.
Patented Mar. 19, 1912.
serial No. 509,709.
To all whom t may concern -Be it known that I, JOHN PETERSON, of Faribault, Rice county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Benches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a bench designed for use of a person seated at a piano or organ, and the particular object of the invention is to provide means whereby the seat portion may be raised or lowered or adjusted at different heights to suit the player.
My invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifica-tion, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a piano bench, embodying my invention, the raised position of the bench top being indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the seat portion in its raised position, Fig. 3 is a sectional view, illustrating the seat tilted forward, Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line w-m of Fig. 2, Fig. 5illustratesamodiication in the device for holding the seat in its raised position, Fig. 6 illustrates another modification in the means for raising the seat, Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are detail views of the blocks or strips for supporting the raised seat.
In the drawing, 2 represents the lower portion of the bench, 3 the box or upper portion having a recess or receptacle 4L, in which music may be kept.
5 is the flat plate forming the top of the bench. Various means have been provided for supporting the top in a raised position, but all have proved more or less objectionable, owin to the expense of construction and the di culty of adjustment. To avoid the objection to the bench, as usually made, I provide bars 6, pivoted at 7 to the rear edge of the top 5 and also pivoted to the wall 8 of the box near the front of the bench. Links 9 and 10 pivotally connect the middle portions of the bars 6 with the under side of the top 5. The link 10 has a lug 1l thereon, adapted to enter a notch l2 in the other link when they are opened in line with one another' to limit their movement, as when the top of the bench or the cover of the box is raised to permit access to its interior. This manner of hinging the top of the bench on the side walls permits it to be lifted vertically to increase the height of the bench and to support the top when raised, I provide blocks 13 having dowel-pins 14 on their lower edges fitting within sockets 15 in the walls 8. These blocks, as shown, are the same width from end to end and support the top of the bench in a horizontal position. Blocks 16, wider than the blocks 13 may be employed, and if preferred, blocks 17, tapered from one end to the other to support the bench top on an incline may be used, as indicated in Fig. 3. These blocks are loose and when not in use will be kept in the box where they can he conveniently reached by the person using the bench.
In Fig. 5, I have shown blocks 18, which are permanently attached to the walls of the box by hinges and have extensions .19 hinged thereon, by means of which the bench top can be raised still higher. When these blocks are not in use, they may be tilted down into the box. In Fig. 6 another modilication is shown, which consists in providing plates 20, having a series of arms thereon of different length, said plates being secured by screws 21 to the walls of the box and adapted to revolve in a vertical plane to adjust the arms and support the bench top at different elevations. These plates can be made sufficiently heavy to form substantial supports for the bench top at each end of the bench.
I claim as my invention A music bench comprising a box having a bottom and side and end walls and supporting legs, a cover therefor, links pivotally connecting one of the longitudinal edges of said cover on the underside thereof with the end walls of the box beneath and near the opposite longitudinal edge of said cover and within the box and near the bottom thereof, the pivotal connections of said links with the walls of the box allowing said cover to contact with and rest upon said Walls, said links allowing said Cover limit the backward movement of said cover to be lifted and Supported in a plane paralwhen it is raised. 10 lel substantially with the bottom of said In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set boX and also allowing said cover to be my hond this 19th day of July 1909.
5 lifted to a substantially Vertical position, JOHN PETERSON.
and links pivotally connecting` the middle Vitn/esses: portion of said cover with the correspond- M. KENNEY, ing portions of said links and operating` to C. M. STOGKTON.
