PACKING AND DISPLAY BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,039, dated November 19, 1901.
Application filed September 25, 1901. Serial No. 76,476. (N0 111 11910 T0 ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. LINDSAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain'ne'w and useful Improvements in Packing and Display Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to packing-boxes, has for its object a box in Which one or more articles of merchandise can be securely packed for transportation and conveniently and advantageously handled by salesmen and others for displaying the article or articles in presenting them for sale, and consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure l is a detail perspective of my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the outer member of my packing-box, preferably open at one end, as at a, and provided with notches b b to afford access to the inner member to seize it with the thumb and forefinger to withdraw it from the outer member; B, the inner member, which is out part way through and folded ate 0, leaving a flat part (1, which forms an end to the packing-box and fills the open Fig. 2.
To the inner face of'the member B is secured one or more articles'of merchandise in any preferred manner -such as by stitches, staples, or the like-so that thearticle or ar-V ticles will be securely held in place during transportation or in handling and when be ing displayed for sale.
For the purpose of illustration I have shown afountain-syringe 0, its tube D, a tube-clam p E, and nozzles F, secured to the inner mem ber; but it is obvious that many other articles of merchandise may be handled in like manner.
Before folding the inner member B of the packing-box a tube G, preferably of paper, is
inserted adjacent to the fold to prevent creas ing of the fountain and prevent the breaking down of the inner member in handling it to insert and withdraw it from the outer member A and While packed. The several parts comprising a fountain-syringe are thus readily and conveniently displayed for sale and require no subsequent rearrangement for re turning them to the box, and the deterioration due to handling and folding the goods is obviated and the goods kept clean and presentable for sale while in stock and especially adapted for transportation through the mail or by other carriers of merchandise.
The box thus constructed, while it possesses the especial advantages enumerated, is adapted for use for retaining the articles after sale in like manner as any standard box.
To display the contents of the box, the inner member B is withdrawn from the outer member A and unfolded, and may then be laid on a counter or show-case or suspended by the hand of the salesman, or it may be attached to a nail or pin by the eyelet c.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim isv 1. A packing-box consisting of an outer member, and aninn'er foldable member, provided with means for securing an article of merchandise thereto, said article being folded therewith and inclosed thereby for packing, and unfolded therewith to form a display-card.
2. A packing-box consisting of an outer member open at one end, and an inner member provided with means for securing an article of merchandise to the inner side thereof and folded to inclose said article and insertible through the open end of the outer member, and constructed to be unfolded to form a display-card.
3. A packing-box consisting of an outer member, a folded inner member provided with means for securing an article of merchandise thereto, and a detached member in serted in the folded end of the inner member and between the adjacent surfaces of said article of merchandise.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE A. LINDSAY.
