A Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. ASHLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SANITARY CLOSET OR SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,697, dated November 19, 1901. Application filed September 27, 1899. Serial No. 731,879- (No model.)
To all whom may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD E. ASHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Closets or Safes, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to sanitary closets or safes, and particularly to that class of safes which are built in outside walls to contain perishable matter, such as food, and are provided with means for permitting a circulation of air through them.
I will describe a safe or closet embodying my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 3 of a closet or safe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the closet or safe shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4t is a perspective view of a portion of the safe. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a supporting-shelf employed in the safe.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
A represents a wall, which is preferably an outside wall, having an opening in which the safe or closet is to be built or arranged. The safe or closet may comprise a casing B, having two opposite sides open, which serve as a lining for the opening, a front portion b for one of the open sides, and a back portion b' for the other open side. The front and back portions are provided with anges h", which inclose the casing or lining B, and the front and back are held together by means of bolts b3. A door h? is suitably hung from the front i), so as to be opened and closed. The back portion b' is provided with transverse openings b'l, and protecting these openings from rain, snow, dsc., are hoods b5. Each hood has lateral ears h6, through which screws are passed to secure the hoods to the back portion.
C represents a shelf provided with supporting-flanges c at two sides and one end. The shelf C is located at the bottom of the safe or closet, and it forms, in connection with the bottom of the casing or lining B, or, in case the lining is not used, the bottom ofthe opening, a conduit intowhich the air passes from the lower opening h". The air escapes from the conduit at its frontend through openings c', provided in the shelf C. The air then oirculates freely in the closet or safe and passes out through the upper transverse opening b4.
Additional shelves may be placed within the safe or closet for supporting articles, each being so arranged as to peimit'the air to circulate through the safe or closet.
I have shown one shelf D within the safe or closet. l
What I claim as my invention is 1. A safe or sanitary closet comprising a casing having two opposite sides open, a front portion and door for one open side, a back portion having an opening at its top and bottom for the other open side, protecting-hoods for said openings, and a conduit in communication with the lower opening for conducting air to the front of the casing.
2. The combination in a safe or closet, of a casing, a front and back portion for said casing which are suitably secured together, a solid door hung from said front portion and said back portion being provided with a transverse opening at its top and bottom, a protecting-hood for each ot' said openings, and a hanged supporting-shelf within the safe or closet serving as a conduit for air, which conduit is in communication with the lower transverse openingand is provided with openings at that end which is farthest away from the opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD E. ASHLEY. lVitnesses:
JOHN J. BELL, JOHN G. MOORE.
