TROUSERS-FORMER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,277, dated November 12, 1901.

Be it known that I, ABEL WILDER EwER's, clothesresser, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and use= ful Improvements in Trouscrs-Shapers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in trousers-shapers; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and ef-' ficient device whereby trousers may be so shaped that they will fit properly on the calves of the legs and underneath the seat, so that the front of the trousers where they overhang the boot will present a shapely and practi cally unwrinkled appearance; and it consists, essentially, of two clamps, one being designed to hold the front upper portion of the leg of the trousers flat upon a board and the other the bottom of the legs of the trousers rigidly to the board, and two curved shaping-arms designed to be inserted into the back of the bottoms of the legs of the trousers and held rigidly in position by the holdfast-pins, arranged as hereinafter more particularly explained.

Figure l is a perspective view showing a pair of trousers after having been made and laid fiat upon the board for the purpose of applying my shaping device. Fig. 2 is a detail of the curved spring-arm.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

A is a pair of trousers which'are pressed so that the creases run up the center of the fore part of the leg and back part thereof. The trousers are laid on a board or table 13, so that the legs lie flat one upon the other. The upper fore part a of the legs is held in position by means of a clamp C, which consists of a screw eye or hook c and a spring-arm 0, having a ball-shaped inner end 0 and a substantially L-shaped outer end 0 The L- shaped end 0 forms a base whereby a springpressure is exerted upon the inner ball-shaped end 0 so as to hold the trousers in place at this point. The screw-eye 0 forms the fulcrum or resistance in order that the pressure may be maintained. Such pressure may be varied according to which of the notches o in the clamp is opposite to the screw-eye. I

provide a similar clamp C, the ball-shaped end 0' of which fits near the bottom of the legs of the trousers and over the seams, thereby securely clamping the bottoms of the legs of the trousers in position upon the board or table.

D D are two arc-shaped arms which are inserted into the back of the legs inside the creases and extend upwardly any desired distance. The outer ends of the arms are made double, as indicated, and are provided with a plurality of notches d.

E isa pin which is inserted in the board and against which the arms D D abut at one side, and E is a pin against which the arms D abut at the opposite side, such latter pin being near the outer end of the arms and designed to fit into or against any one of the notches d, according to the pressure it is desired to exert on the opposite end of the arm, it of course being understood that such arms D are spring-arms.

By means of the arms D, taken in connection with the clamps C, which hold the trousers in position, so that the arms D may act with the greatest facility, it will be seen that I can produce a perfect shape to the back of the trousers, so as to fit the calf of the leg, and thereby insure the trousers at the front fitting in a shapely manner over the boot, which is the main object sought to be obtained,

What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a clamping means for holding trousers in position at the front portion of the leg,'of arc-shaped arms designed to be inserted into the bottoms of the legsof the trousers inside the back creases and means for maintaining a backward pressure upon the inner ends of such arc-shaped arms as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination with a clamping means for holding trousers in position at the front portion of the leg, of spring arc-shaped arms designed to be inserted into the bottoms of the legs of the trousers inside the back creases and a pin inserted in front of the arms in proximity to the trousers and a pin inserted relatively to the rear of the arms near the outer ends thereof and designed to fit into the notches in the same as and for the purpose specified.
