UN TTED STATEfi PATENT @FNQE.
GEORGE P. DEWEES, OF KANSAS CITY, MTSSOURI.
HAT-HOLDER.
Application filed February 12, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE P. Dnwnns, citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ladies hat holders for theaters and other public places, and my object is to produce a simple and efii cient device for this purpose to be attached to the back of each seat.
lVith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a portion of the back of a chair with a hat holder embodying my invention, secured thereto. Fig. 2, is a detail perspective view of the operative portion of the device.
In carrying my invention into effect, a spring wire is bent to form a pair of parallel portions 1 and 2, arranged closely together, the portion 2 being longer than and projecting beyond the upper end of portion 1, and at the junction of portions 1 and 2, the rod is bent to form the eye 3. The wire rod is also bent to provide an eye l at the upper end of portion 2 and a depending arm consisting of a short portion 5 vertically above portion 1 and a long portion 6 which is of substantially the same length as portion 1 and is disposed outward thereof, the rod being bent at 7 at the junction of portions 5 and 6 to constitute a spring hinge whereby portion 6 may be capable of movement back and forth, and at the lower end of portion 6 is formed a large ring 8 to constitute a handle, said ring or handle standing at right angles to the eye 3 so that its inner portion may engage and clamp against portions 1 and 2 and eye 3, the rim of the hat or other object to be supported and when it is desired to release said object the operator inserts a finger in the ring 8 and springs arm 6 outward, performing the same function Specification of Letters Patent.

when it is desired to place the rim of the hat or other object int-o the holder so that the latter will reliably support it.
The holder is placed against the back 9 of a chair and is secured in position by screws 10 and 11 or equivalent devices which extend through eyes 3 and 4 into the back of the chair. 7
To guard against the apparel of a person passing between the rows of seats, catching on one of the holders and also for the purpose of embellishment,'tl1e upper portion of each holder is incased by a hollow guard 13, through which the upper screw 11 extends to clamp the guard in position against the seat, and the guard is provided with wings 14 secured at their extremities by screws 15 to the back of the chair, these wings being adapted to bear any suitable advertising inscription or other matter.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a hat holder for public places embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and I wish it to be understood that while I have illustrated-and described the preferred embodiment of the same, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact details of construction shown and described except as defined by the scope of the appended claim as obvious modifications will suggest themselves to one skilled in the art.
I claim:
A hat holder made from a piece of spring wire bent to form a pair of parallel portions arranged side by side, one portion terminating short of the upper end of the other portion, the lower ends of said portions being connected by an eye and the upper end of the longer portion being bent to form an eye parallel with the first eye, a third portion extending downward from the second eye parallel with said longer portion and in alinement with the other parallel portion, a lower portion disposed opposite the adjacent sides of said pair of parallel portions and extending substantially parallel there with and terminating at its lower end in an eye extending at right angles to the first eye and normally bearing against the adjacent sides of said pair of parallel portions and the upper parts of said lower portion 10 at the upper side of said first eye, and a bent and said pair of parallel portions.
portion connecting the lower end of said In testimony whereof I ZL'lfiX my signature, third portion and the upper end of said in the presence of two witnesses.
lower p01 tion, in combination with 1 guano GEORGE P DEX/VIBES.
secured against said second eye, said third portion and the upper endof said longer portion, and embodying a hollow portion fitting over and inelosing the bent portion Witnesses H. Rononns, G. Y. THORIE.
Copies; of this pateutmay be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
