PATENT OFFICE.
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO DAVID E. DAY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOSOM- BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,361, dated June '7, 1887.
Application filed December 13, 1880. Serial No. 22l,4(i9.
To all whmn/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MALCOLM F. MQINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bosom Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to bosom-boards; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter set forth and explained in the specification and claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a top or plan view of my improved board, with a bosom having the neekband broken away thereon. Fig. 2 is a'view of a section thereof in I perspective. Fig. 3 is a central crosssection of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the inside section of the neckbandsupport of my bosom-board. Fig. 5 is a like view of the outside section of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures. v
In the construction of my improved bosomboard I make the body A preferably of wood, with its lower end somewhat narrower at B than the upper end, G, and with the corners of the lower part, B, of the board cut away, so as to form the projection E thereon. The edges of the board A, I make nearly half-round from B to O, as illustrated in the cross-section, Fig. 3. Along these rounded edges I secure the clamping-strips F F by means of arms G G, pivoted to the board A- by means of pintles g, inserted in the upper end, 0, and in the shoulders B of the board,.so that the clampingstrips F will swing entirely around the edges of the board from one side to the other, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The end a of the projecting portion E of the board is likewise rounded and provided with a clamping-strip, H, secured to the sides of said projection by means of arms I I, pivoted upon pintles z in the edges of the projection E, so that the strip H (No model.)
will swing around the end 6 from one side of the board to the other.
On each side of the board A and the pro-' j ecti ng portion E thereof I secure pads or cush ions J and J, as illustrated in Fig. 3, one of 5 these cushions being preferably covered with fine white cloth in a manner suitable for the ironing of fine white bosoms thereon, while the othenside may be covered with coarser cloth, so as to be suitable for the ironing of 6 coarse or colored bosoms thereon, the side. clamps, F F, and the end clamp, H, operating with equal facility for securing bosoms upon either side of the board.
To the central part of the upper end, 0, of 6 the board I attacha handle, P, which I make either of wireor of a flat strip of metal in the shape of a half-circle, projecting outwardly from the end 0 of the board.
To the central portion of the upper end, 0, 7 of the bosom-board I securea removable neckbandsupport, D, by means of a clamp, K, secured thereto and adapted to slip over the end 0 of the board, by means whereof the neckband-support may be secured upon either side 7 of the board A, as desired. This neekbandsupport D preferably consists of a circular in side band, L, of spring metal, secured to a clamp, K, and adapted to fit inside of the neckband of a shirt and expand itself outwardly, 8 so as to fill a neekband placed upon it. Inside of this band L springs O O are secured to the clamp K, the ends of which springs project through slots 6 i in the end-s of the band L, so as to enter the buttonholes in the back of a 8 neekband, the tension of these springs being inward, so that when the ends thereof are inserted into the button-holes of a neekband placed on the support the springs O O operate to draw the neekband tightly around the hand L, the band L at'thc same time operating to expand it outwardly, the joint action of the band L and of the springs O 0 operating to stretch the neckbandtightly around the band L, without regard to ordinary variations in the sizes thereof. The neekband-support D is in place thereon, this band N being provided with catches a, so arranged as to adapt it to fit different-sized bands.
In operation, the neckband of the shirt is first placed upon the neckband-suppo rt and secured thereto. Then the lower end ofthebosorn is drawn down and secured by the clamp H, the outside band, N, operating to prevent the neckband from being drawn out ofplaee. After securing the lower end of the bosom the sides of the bosom may be stretched and secured by means of the side clamps, F F, when the bosom is ready to be ironed.
It is obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that, as my de vice is constructed, the clamps F F and H will operate with equal facility for securing a bosom toeither side of the band, and also that the neckband-support D is readily adjustable to operate on either side of the board.
Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination, in a bosom-board, of
the rigid side clamps, F F, and end clamp, H, pivotally connected to and adapted to operate from either side of the board A, with a removable neckband expander, L, provided with the springs O O and the adjustable clamping-band N, adapted to clamp the neckband of a shirt to the expander L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. The combination, in a ueckband-expander for a bosom-board, of the circular metallic inside band, L, the springs O O, and the support therefor, D, with an adjustable clamping band, N, adapted to be clamped around a neekband on said expander, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MALCOLM F. MOINTYRE.
